I've just installed PN on a hosted Linux server, using a local NT-server for mySQL. The speed is absolutely crap! Is there any speed differences between NT and Linux for mySQL with PN. I'm going to make a new installation anyway, so please; What platform should I choose for my mySQL database.

My database is on a Pentium 233MMX box with 704/128 bps in/out. Would I gain much in changing to a faster server? Don't give me a "Pentium 4" answer, please, as I'm trying to keep the cost down to a minimum. My thinking is that mySQL should work fine on this box... Am I wrong?

The problem is almost certainly not the boxes or the OS's used but what your trying to do.

PostNuke (and other CMS's of the breed) are database intensive. Every page generation talks to the database. If you have you site on a hosted web space but the database on a local machine on a DSL connection you are never going to get good performance.

Each component will peform fine in isolation but the lag of the connection will kill performance. The web server and database server need to have a fast persistent link. This would usually be achieved by having the DB on the same server or on the same network (and subnet).

As a test setup a local installation of PN to talk to the database and you'll notice the performance increase significantly. Is there any reason why you can't use your hosts mysql database?

I can't see anyway you will get anything but poor performance out of this setup. You also should consider the security implications of having your mysql database available for th world to connect too.

My main reason for havinge mySQL on an "in house" server, is cost. My host charges a lot for the SQL-server, while PHP is included as standard. Prsonally, I don't see any reason to offer PHP without the SQL option, so I've chosen to do it this way. What do you think about serving everything from home on the mentioned setup (P233/MMX, ADSL 704in/128out)?

If this is the case then I would look at a new host. You can serve the entire site from a DSL connection but only on a low usage site. I have a test site on my cable modem connection but this a test site only. Also check you contract with your DSL supplier there may be contractual limitations on usage of your connection.

You won't achieve the DB/Web split solution you were originally looking at without significant performance degredation as you've already seen.

OK! Thanks! I've reconcidered the installation and will now go for a multisite with subdomains. I've got a problem finding really good (for a norwegian) documentation. First of all; Do I have to install a complete setup in all subs, or can I use one installation for all? I need to know this before starting my reading.

My layout will be as follows:

    - britishcars.domain.com (PN already installed with PostKart and PNzClass.)
    - - Mini (want to share the Mini-parts from News, PK and PNzClass. Shared users.)
    - - Rover (want to share the Rover parts from News, PK and PNzClass. Shared users.)
    - - Clubs (wants to send news to britishcars.domain.com. Separate users)
    - main.domain.com (to collect the information from all existing and new subs. Shared users)
    - photo.domain.com (separate photo site with shared users)

I guess this is a difficult question, but I'm trying to find a way to solve my problems here :?

Sorry I can't help you there as i've never used the multisites setup. Now i'm on the dev team it's on my list of things to become familiar with. Maybe someone else could step in and help or you could try posting a new message with your new aims.

I have indeed tried to search the forum. To be honest, I've done nothing but surfing postnuke.com for the last two weeks. Thanks for that link.

Any experiences on the Template engines out there? I really need to speed up my PN sites. Some pages takes up to a minute to download on modems. Check my main site: http://bestbritish.xpot.net and please give me your times/ connection speed and perhaps som advices..? Thanks!

For me that came up in around a second but then i'm based on the UK JANET network during the day. My organisation has as 100Mbit link to the JANET network.

Hope this helps although i'm not the ordinary user of your site.

Sounds fear, as my line is 704 kbs and gets it all in about 10 sek. Any modem/ISDN users out there?

LOL... the link to the search function is part of my signature, it shows up on every post of mine, so please know that it wasn't directed at you personally!

In any case I hope that the link to jojodees site has helped you out with your multisites.

I really don't know. I found a grey box with "14.400 Ultra High Speed Modem" and thought it might had something to do with internet... :?:

Back to the multisite-setup. I've gone thru the fine article at
    http://www.athomeand…e&pageid=4&pageno=1
but I'm about to understand that my english or intelect is overestimated. Is setting up a multisite considered an easy operation? Is asking for direct help (logging on to my server and do the operation) a legal (common) question in this forum?
