I've been building web sites for over 15 years. I have built my own very simple CMS for specific data input for clients. from scratch. without ever even taken a single course in programming. I am not a dummy.
I have never ever seen anything as useless and frustrating as this CMS.
after going nuts trying to login with the login I created at install which wouldn't work and doing a password change routine I finally get in to find
there is NO WAY TO ADD CONTENT. NO WAY TO CREATE A PAGE. NONE. NADA.
I have looked at every single screen in the entire admin. nothing. nothing in the online documentation.
I can create an admin message and it shows at the top of the home page! why would I want to put an admin message on the homepage?
admin messages would intuitively be for admins wouldn't they?
am I missing something? have I gone insane? I see the Categories but there is no way to add anything to any of them.
(and why the hell is there a gender category?)
this is nuts. I feel like I've lost my mind completely.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
then when I try to acess the forum to ask for help or look for help and I click on the configuration and use link it keeps taking me back to the documentation, NOT the forum, instead of letting me see posts and which contains information about things that don't exist, but doesn't let me post or ask questions. It took me like 15 minutes to find out where to register to make this post.
everything I try to do it (your site and the app itself) takes me around in circles. half the stuff mentioned in the documentation doesn't exist at all in the application. i.e the aforementined start pages thing.
found something in the docs about modules to create pages. and something about a news module. doesn't exist. and couldn't find them in the modules download section. they didn't exist there either. one would think that would be included in the base install. what good is a Content Management System if you can't create and add content to a web site in any possible way whatsoever???
I can imagine what someone who is not a developer would go thru trying to find information here. much less understand any of it. much less be able to use the application.
You have to do better than this.

IS it even remotely possible that you may have had caps lock on when you created your password, or typoed it? I've rarely had this problem in numerous installs, even of pre-alpha releases, much less the final releases.

That's because what is currently available here is not a CMS but an Application Framework, we are working on a distribution including things like the news module and static pages, but it's a work in progress.

It's a message FROM the Admin. That's why. ANd it's the only "Content" module that ships with the core, and even then, with 1.3+ it's just an HTML block and that module is no longer included.

Categories shouldn't, IMHO, be in the "Content Tab" they are a reusable system for multiple modules, providing categorizations for content, and Gender can be a valid category for categorizations.

When you install modules that provide content, you do have start page options, in the settings, you pick what module you want to be the main output on your site.

Presuming, based on the reference to Admin Messages, you're using 1.2.8:

PostCalendar: http://community.zikula.org/module-Extensions-display-ot-component-componentid-212.htm

In a Content Management System, yes, but that is not what is currently available here, it's a framework system that is bare bones and not for the feint of heart to build a site with, it is an empty slate ready for you to customize. Not a cookie cutter site presuming to know what you want to do.

I need to clarify something right off the bat - Zikula Core is not a CMS, it is a platform for writing web applications. If you want CMS then you need to install a module like Clip which has the CMS features you are looking for and a whole whole lot more :)
Quite shortly in the future we will ship Zikula with Clip so there is CMS out of the box.

No need for rants and sarcasm. A simple question would have been much more useful and friendly. Good luck.

Just to add, if you need help just come back to these help forums and we will try to help you out. If you need examples of Zikula with added modules, you can take a look at one of my sites http://www.EarlyMusicNews.org. It uses the News module[1] (I love this module!) and the Web_links module[2]. Both of these modules are used quite heavily. You may find that you need different modules for your needs.
Remember that we are from different parts of the world and if some of the language used in response to any queries sound a little abrupt, then, it is most likely that the person answering does not have the same first language. So just be patient, we are all volunteers.
Cheers,
Marc

The previous posters make good points (Zikula is a framework rather than a CMS, honey works better than vinegar, lots of good content modules to use, etc.)
I would happily concede that documentation is not our strong suit at the moment. I am not a coder but have tried to contribute here by helping new users and building/fixing documentation. Change has been big and fast lately and I have hung back waiting for 1.3 to be the established system and will then jump back into documentation.
Most importantly, aside from the quality of the coding behind the scenes, our biggest strength is the community support. All volunteers, but all dedicated. You will find good help here, if you choose to stay and give Zikula a try.

Sorry, the question should be "Am I able to use this to actually do anything at all?" Apparently this is not the case so far.
Zikula is capable of doing a LOT. If you look in the forum topic for showcases http://community.zi…wforum-forum-14.htm you see some very nice sites there.
I use Zikula for a Track & Field community website and a business website with a webshop etc. So it is very well possible to use it to do anything at all.....
It all comes down to: do you want to invest the time to learn the system and get to know it. It is not always an "out of the box" system and as told before more a application framework. But with modules (News, Content, e.g. PostCalendar) you can use it as a regular CMS.
