After much discussion on the list there was almost unanimous agreement to move to PHP 5.3. Zikula Core 1.3.0 now requires minimum PHP 5.3.2.
There is plenty of support for PHP 5.3 if you look, including from some pretty large hosts although there are many that have not made the switch yet. The switch is inevitable given that the PHP team no longer maintain PHP 5.2. Many hosts are also offering dual versions configurable in the control panel, 5.2 and 5.3. We made some enquiries during the discussions so here is a list of hosts that we found supporting PHP 5.3 at the time of writing:
- All-inkl - http://all-inkl.de/ (Largest in Germany)
- ServerGrove - http://www.servergrove.com/ (USA)
- Host Gator - http://www.hostgator.com/ (USA)

Is there any particular reason for 5.3.2 instead of for instance 5.3.0? My current webhost is lacking a little behind (already asking them to upgrade) and has only 5.3.0 at the moment.

Yes, the reason is there are some specific methods in the Reflection classes we need which allow the visibility of private and protected methods to be changed. These methods are primarily required by Doctrine 2 which will be our main ORM.
