Found this article by accident and it provoked some thoughts about Zikula as a CMS. I don't think anyone here could successfully argue that Zikula has anywhere near the current market penetration as Drupal, Joomla, Mambo or Wordpress, so the question is, how do we get there? Of course the topic gets raised here consistently, but typically from a negative perspective. I think ALL developers are at least slightly biased toward what they know best and work with most. This is the biggest reason why I continue to use Zikula. I know it. So how would you answer the questions in the article (Advantages/Disadvantages)?
- Advantages (of Zikula v1.3.0)
- very clean core code
- some very good developers for hire
- long history (e.g. PostNuke), maintaining Backward Compatibility where possible
- easy to theme/override/customize
- very good static page creation/management (Content/Pages)
- very clean core code
- Disadvantages (of Zikula v1.3.0)
- fewer extensions (modules/themes) than major CMS's
- smaller community
- fewer extensions (modules/themes) than major CMS's
I've recently had the 'pleasure' of working with a Joomla site and can concur with the article's author. It is very difficult, but I attribute some of that to my own lack of knowledge (or desire to learn). I've only had the most basic exposure to WordPress and haven't ever seriously looked into Drupal.
So what do you feel the advantages of Zikula are? Have you used the other major CMS's? how do you feel we compare?
