Mediashare or not mediashare, that is my question...  Bottom

  • I'm in trouble with the right media module. I'm looking for a media tool to handle jpg (album and single), pdf and mp3 (and some options more, if possible). I have used in the past photoshare and later Mediashare. That is fine so far, but...
    1. If I try to embed a pdf via xinha plugin I get trouble with the lightbox (the pdf is not able to be linked). mp3 not tryed actually.
    2. Some bugs are not solved (e.g. album links) and my users will not be able to avoid this trouble (they are less skilled computer users). All bugs are reportet, but nobody is taken the responsibility of them. Unfortunally I'm not able to fix them myself.
    3. Mediashare is still not transfered to gettext. So I will be in upgrade trouble in some months
    4. Quota for Mediashare is not as comfortable as photoshare has been. Some users need more space than others. That is not configurable anymore.
    5. ...

In general Mediashare is not a bad thing. In general it fullfill my demands. But it is not in development anymore. Bug and featrure requests are not solved. What other alternatives are given:

    1. If I try MediaAttach it is much to complicate. The permissions are not finished (I have to give the users admin rights!), sorting of categories are not working and a lot of other things I can not live with.

    2. Files looks nice. But is just working for pictures and not for pdf and mp3. And it is not developed for 1.2 anymore I guess.

    3. There are some other options for pictures (e.g. userpictures).

I know, we discussed this in the forum several times. but I have now to do my choice. And I feel so uncomfortable at the moment icon_frown

    Any suggestions of the community?

Not quite true. The version in SVN has been converted to gettext.

I also have some code cleanups to commit to Mediashare and then (once I find some time) plan on working on it a bit. IMHO Mediashare will continue to work in future Zikula versions.

Thats true, but it is very buggy and not released.

that makes the descission much more easy. I hoped for this kind of answer. The concept of Mediashare is what we need.

Yes, but bugs can (and hopefully will) be fixed ...

I personally think that Mediashare is the best module of this type that we have. However, it has some annoying features/quirks that I would like to fix. I plan on doing that, however *when* I'll be doing that is a different matter. It seems that as of 2 months ago I can't find time for anything anymore.

  • It Would be great to have one single location for all my document, pictures and other files, witch I can link to from different modules. This would be a great asset for Zikula, THX to all working on this module now and in the past
  • Hi, we talked about Mediashare on the Camp Zikula '10 as well. Carsten and Drak have done a lot of work in getting it ready for 12x, but it is (or seems to be) quite a difficult module to maintain and get ready for 1.3. There was some discussion if the functionality should not be taken and a new module (with modulestudio for instance) created that is more easy to fit into zk1.3.

I'm looking towards a media application myself as well. I'm still using extended file manager a lot in Xinha, but that also has its cons. But it works still and from within Xinha. But fancy stuff like a showing a gallery or using thumbnails and modal windows for full images is not in there.

  • IMHO the future of media handling is a small base module (Files) which can be extended by a plugin system for adding more functionality, to avoid redundancies and provide a full set of features. Please read http://code.zikula.org/files/ticket/2 for a more comprehensive description of this idea.

  • Fine with me, I like the idea of Files, as long as the extensions will be made of course. As long as the good ideas of the various media applications are taken into account (Mediashare, MediaAttach, etc). But Files is not being developed for 12x any more, so it will take quite some time before this will be a full media application (base +extensions).

I like the idea behind files a lot. It would be great, if we can have a successor of Mediashare with files. But I need something for today. And that looks like nothing else than Mediashare is possible in my case.

shit, Roberts knows that I am not patient enough icon_biggrin

I think I will use Mediashare as it is right now. This descission is combined with the hope to have a Mediashare upgrade in the future.

    Thanks for the input!

The problem is more along the lines of my current schedule, which is pretty insane.

  • I think that a photo album module for Zikula is very very important. And we should establish a larger team.

Anyone who is interested in helping the development? Please.
  • I would like tothink along and hopefully do some declopment. A successor to Mediashare with all modern stuff in there based upon Files maybe would be great.
The new experience with uploading for news helps and I have also used the API from smugmug.

So any ideas on how to give this shape?

  • I agree wholeheartedly that a photo gallery module is an essential element for Zikula.

However I don't understand why, instead of building a module from scratch, we don't use the fabulous open source Gallery. To build a gallery module that would come close to the functionality of Gallery http://gallery.menal…allery_3.0_released
would require a project team much bigger than Zikula itself and take years!

Gallery 3 has just been released after a long beta and release candidate phase. They have great testing and security audits and are strictly focused on providing an open source photo/video storage engine.

I've been using Gallery 2 integrated with Postnuke/Zikula with the mGallery2 module for many years, it works, but just barely with many quirks. If just a fraction of the effort was put into a new "from scratch" integration module for either Gallery 2 or 3 you could have a first class photo/video storage engine for Zikula and leverage the years of effort put out by the Gallery team.

What do you mean with this? Did I miss a feature in "Files"?

Yeah, I have a lot of feature requests, too. But first we should be able to install Mediashare in Zikula 1.3. That's my current problem.

I am willing to invest much time in the module. But I need help in the PHP programming.

I had used the Menalto Gallery over very many years and I have to live with many compromises. Meanwhile we are also reached in UTF8 and thus is the biggest problem away.

The G2/G3 is great. I have no doubt. But I think that this is the wrong way. I like 'no bridges: Duplicate user administration, duplicate comment and rating hooks, double rendering and PHP frameworks, no way for Xinha or "Content" plugins, etc.

We need a media module in the middle of Zikula modules.

Totally agree with this. Either a revamped Mediashare or an entirely new module would be great. icon_smile

Another option would be to create a Clip/PageMaster gallery pubtype and a Scribite/Xinha plugin to go with it. Personally, I'd like this option the best, but we would need the schema import/export capabilities in Clip that Pagesetter has in order to share the pubtype. I would happily create one if only I could export it for use by others...
