CPU Usage?  Bottom

  • We recently added a new recommended hosting provider called 'Sitecloud' on the page http://zikula.org/CMS/Hosting/ because they actually address this particular problem specifically. You might want to look at their blurb, their hosting scales dynamically.

  • It's something to think about. If you recall, my previous host essentially kicked me off because of my usage and I didn't really have a lot of time to look around. I'm going to try and work with NetFirms and see what happens.

  • Another option is the NetFirms Virtual Private Server.

  • I have with classissima similar problems (cpu usage, previous post on perf, ...) than eledril.

I am in shared hosting yet (with 60Gb monthly bandwith, increasing month after month). My hosting provider suggest to adopt a dedicated server, more expensive and less of service (monitoring, backup, ...). So, if I go that way, I will probably do more technical stuff ... but I haven't the compentencies for that (and don't want to acquire them).

    On http://zikula.org/CMS/Hosting/, we can read:

    Quote

Neosurge is simply the best Zikula hosting solution available.

and the community.zk footpages link to Neosurge. And now SiteCloud is recommended for this particular problem.

So I don't know what to do ...

I should listen your point of view: SiteCloud or Neosurge ?

    Thanx,

    laurent

Note: classissima has a French IP. US/UK trafic is low. If classissima have tomorrow an US IP, it will be problably good for US visibility, but does the EU trafic decrease fast ?
  • SiteCloud's specific offering addresses exactly this - that website resources scale up as much as required but yet offer the same simplicity as in a shared hosting environment. This is why they were added as a recommended host because this addresses a common issue in PHP/MySQL script hosting. VPS/Dedicated servers are perfect for busy sites, but they come at the expense of technical administration.

I personally am not a fan of shared hosting but that is because I am personally familiar with dedicated/VPS environments.

I guess you have to read each site's blurb and decide for yourself what is best for you.

    Drak

  • An interesting interview of SiteCloud CEO.

    laurent

Note: my hosting provider have closed classissima this morning.
  • I had a similar situation with hostgator due to photoshare being a big fat pig.
moving to a dedicated server fixed everything.
  • I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my service. With the rate my site is growing, I decided that I'd better get ahead of it.

  • I’ve been with Netfirms for 10 years. Likely the same level [mediocre] satisfaction as you. Lately, I get those emails about 20 times per day.

For a couple of weeks, the support [lack of a better word] group made statements like:

“If you find you genuinely need a higher limit, our Enterprise 1, 2, and 3 packages offer a 50%, 100%, and 150% CPU per hour limit.”

“We apologize for the frustration you have had. A large number of reports about excessive CPU usage are now coming in and we are investigating the reason for possible false positives.

We expect to provide you with an update shortly. Thank-you for your patience.”

“Please be informed that your account is indeed exceeding it’s CPU usage limit. Kindly enable log files in your account, so that you can see which file on your website is hitting the most traffic. To do so, kindly refer the link below:
    http://support.netfirms.com/hosting/configuration/how-do-i-turn-access-logs

You may download your raw log file, then us a third party web analyzer such as Alterwind.”

“Please be informed that we received confirmation from our System Administrators that your account is reaching it’s CPU usage limit.”

    GET THIS….

    “Hello,

    Thank you for replying.

This ticket is now closed. Thank you for contacting Netfirms.

    Regards,

    Lucy
    Netfirms Support Team.”

    THEN FINALLY FROM SUPERVISOR

    “Hello Steve,

At Netfirms, we limit our CPU resources to ensure our shared hosting customers are allotted a fair amount. This limit is in place to prevent heavy users from accessing all the CPU resources thereby slowing down the server for customers under the same shared host. At our old data centre, these limits were in place however it was not enforced. This resulted in customer websites being brought down due to other customers. At the new data centre, we are enforcing these limits strictly by implementing the process that you have outlined in your email. We apologize if this has caused any inconvenience. We thank you for your understanding.

    Regards,
    Philip
    Netfirms Management Team”

    THEN FROM ME
“Would it have been so difficult for one of your line CSRs to explain that instead of the garbage responses that everyone is talking about? What you have said, can be understood.

Now to try and understand why I have traffic still coming from China when I have blocked the whole country. Any suggestions would be appreciated.”

    THEN FROM THEM

“It is possible that all IP addresses from China may not be covered in the htaccess file. Users in China may also use proxy servers to visit websites located in other locations. It may not be possible to fully block all traffic from China.”

I have about 200 sites with them.

    Any questions, sb@steveboyd.biz

    Drak,

SiteCloud had an ambitious plan but it didn't work out. They have abandoned the cloud hosting and also the SiteCloud brand name and merged all their customers back into the GreenGeeks parent brand that does regular shared hosting.

    site redirects to Green Geeks
    http://www.sitecloud.com

    Discussed on WebHostingTalk
    http://www.webhostin…hread.php?t=1037468

Might want to take them off the recommended hosts list.
