MyLittleForum Conversion/Integration  Bottom

  • I just posted a code request at Zikula Pro: http://zikulapro.com/index.php?module=zikula&func=viewpub&tid=11&pid=64

What would it take to convert a third-party forum script into a full-blown Zikula module (preferably for 1.3)? Would it be better to just create a user data bridge?

Either way, looking for bids and ideas. The forum script in question is MyLittleForum, http://mylittleforum.net

MLF uses Smarty and I have already converted the default MLF template into a Zikula theme.

    Live example of MLF: http://beerleg.com
Live example of Zikula with MLF theme: http://shop.beerleg.com/index.php

    Thanks!

  • Looks a bit like the Vanilla forum module we had some time ago. It would be nice to have a minimum feature forum module like that, but I guess it's less work to start from beginning using ModuleStudio.

For a "full-blown" forum I can tell from onw experience that this is a lot of work. I would rather join the Dizkus or the Zafenio team and help there to continue, instead of starting such a new project.

    Greetings,
    Chris

I suppose, but it functions quite a bit differently. It goes way back to the days of the internet before we started using a lot of graphics. But MLF added some nifty features that make it a hybrid of those old forum styles and today's forum features. There's a nice mix of Ajax features but without being overdone.

Yes, but can Dizkus or Zafenio display the topics and threads exactly like MLF does? If so, I'd be interested in hearing some bids from folks who could do that, along with an import routine... maybe that would be better than a whole new module. I will update the request at Zikula Pro to reflect that. My users absolutely love the MLF interface and I don't want to upset that.

  • Well
Exploring the MLF code, have to say that's it's not friendly enought to perform a fast conversion to Zikula. In this super-brief experience with MLF it's not clear too me what are the Ajax features, even when I see some Ajax code on its main js file.

The Ajax preview feature seems to be the main one, and I suspect that the preview box is "multi-used", like navigation of the threads, replies, etc. That makes a little harder to convert it cleanly.

The PHP Code has no inline comments icon_frown
well, I guess that with the current API functions available on Dizkus we can add the required Ajax functions and a new theme for the module, to make it look that way with pure Ajax.

  • Well, I believe the thread tree uses Ajax as does the preview feature. It also uses bbcode for posting.

I'm certainly not 100% stuck on using MLF. Fact is, I'd rather have something integrated with Zikula. If that means a whole new module that mimics MLF, that's cool. Or if Dizkus can do the same thing with some extensive template changes, I'm fine with that too. I'm just trying to find a way to use it from within Zikula, so I can take advantage of everything Zikula has to offer. :)
