I have a need for a custom module to be written. It will contain sensitive financial data, but does not need to comply with any government standards (not bank related). The module will need to be permission controlled such that access to its information can be granted a limited number of times a month.
The data will be gathered via a secondary method and stored in a remote mySQL DB. The module would need to be able to send data to a remote machine via an input form, that data would then be parsed on the local machine inside of a custom developed application and the results would be sent back to the web page requesting the data in a structured format. Alternatively, the module may just need to make queries from the database and displya the data on the page. Depending on the complexity of the module, we could go either way.
The access would be based on a membership subscription. If the registered user is an active subscriber to the paid service, they will have access to the module, else, no access. Also, the system would need to be able to handle around 10,000 users with no performance issues.
This seems like it would be rather simple for someone who knows what they are doing, but I'm just a hack. I need to know the timeline, cost and any questions that would be necessary for someone interested in this project.

Just FYI, if you really have 10,000 concurrent users, performance will be down to infrastructure.

Can zikula handle 10,000 users?
What hardware setup would be necessary? -

Yes, number of users is irrelevant. The number of concurrent users is the real issue.

If you really want 10k concurrent users you should probably look at cloud services that can scale with your needs. Check out http://www.rightscale.com for their cloud management system. -

I don't have 10,000 users, let alone 10,000 concurrent. I was only wondering about Zikula being able to handle that many requests/users. It's obvious after speaking with several people that hardware is the bottleneck, not zk. -

I have survived several "Slashdot Attacks" with Zikula sites in the past, so I can confirm from own experience that Zikula is just fine under extreme load. At sidux.com for example we have seen about 20.000 unique users the day after a release, with tops of up to 3.000 concurrent users.
For 10.000 concurrent users you will need need a serious analysis and plan, too many factors are involved to just guess. It makes a huge difference if you have 10.000 users daily at top time, or just once or twice a year. It also depends what these users do on your site.
Greetings,
Chris
