Users of Banners module feedback please...  Bottom

  • Craig & I are working on the 1.3 version of the Banners module, and there are a few things we need feedback on..

    1. Is it really necessary for Banners to have it's own user system? Why can't we use the System's system and Permissions?
    2. Are there any features you'd like to see in it.. Here's a list of some of the new/updated features
    • Banners now have a name so you can tell what is what
    • Banner Type can now be a string not just a two digit number. This allows for meaningful block types that anyone can understand
    • Client notes appear on hover for the clients

Pending additions include new display options (Rotating banners, text over the banner). Ability to use the Files module to upload banners, and the ability to use "linkshare" code for a banner.

Submit a Ticket for feature requests, but please make sure it's not already a request.

  • Michael,

Point 1 - there is absolutely no reason for any module to be maintaining an own user system. I think the old origins of Banners might have been at a time when things were not matured well at all. Some modules need to handle deleted users (well, in fact, they haven't really been able to do so until 1.3) but there is now an event for this. Thinking of an example of a forum where a user is deleted so the reference to UID would be orphaned - in this case there would have to be some handling which was never possible. Now the forum module can handle the case and maybe copy the username before the user is deleted... anyway, I digress. There is no good reason for any module to be maintaining it's own user system and would indicate design issues with the module.

  • Craig & I both agree, but when I asked before, someone, I forget who, had a rationale for it, but I don't recall the rational nor can I find it, that's why I asked again.

  • Sounds really positive I am not a big user of Banners but would like to see the user system where it should belong.
Easy image upload with conversion on the fly would be handy.
  • i have a few suggestions icon_smile

    1) support for swf (use of swfobject to display the swf so that is HTML compliant)
    2) support for HTML (many banners come as <iframe> from the banner providers so user must be able to add this type of banner)

it's difficult however to track statistics with the above filetypes icon_frown

i don't remeber the actual fields the banner module has but also
    1) the user must be able to write alternative text for the banner - if it is an image (very important for search engines). if it's not an image, alternative text is also usefull if you use swfobject. it shows that if the visitor doesn't have flash player
    2) open banner in same or new window (applicable only if banner is image i suppose)
  • I love the idea of using the main user system. I have wanted this for a long time. In a community site this would allow users to internally promote their contributed content as well, if it were allowed as a content form itself. (it would be if I had my may.) User groups permissions is an easy way to distinguish an internal/external user of the banner system and their access to any related statistics.

The banner system has been long neglected, and I am glad to see that it is being updated! While I am not a fan of crass advertising, or more specifically, advertising alone as a revenue model, the need still exists to get the word out about products. Self developed products which might primarily be CONTENT in some cases, articles, Netcasts, videos, whitepapers, should not be forsaken to the considerations of the banner module development. In fact a hook/event(?) to other content modules to tie in promotion of that content through the banner module would be an optimal implementation.

Banner feeds from internally generated banners might be something to consider as well.

Also some type of plugin structure for external services, adsense, OpenX, etc..

Maybe in a future version, a central banner exchange between Zikula powered sites, exchanging content ads. :)
