  • I really wonder about implementing a LikeIT link from facebook - I do not post directly to facebook anything accept stuff I want to loose the rights to! I will not put any of you in the position of having to be logged into facebook or tell facebook and it's 3rd party analytics aggregators about what or where you are/have been. This is an issue that needs more than a unilateral decision IMHO - I do not know how the AddThis works in regards to privacy at this point, but the facebook like sucks data from every site it is on and you become a beacon analytic provider to facebook. This like button is positioned as a convenience and social but it is hardly that. I would like a review of the the topic of how to deal with facebook. Facebook is not Open, they have a public API but the playing field is not level with them.

All any Zikula site owner needs to feed facebook anything is an rss link. This is not to say any facebook development for zikula should cease, hardly! I just caution bundling it without controls for if you want it or not.

again, I do not know how the AddThis version of facebook like works - but it would be great to have an explicit explanation.

    Yes.

  • Paul, all it is is a link submitter, it can do Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. There are dozens of sites it can add a link to. It has nothing to do with Facebook directly.

  • I understand AddThis - a facebook Like Button is , can be very different. I went and read the addthis privacy policy - and I am never convinced that an ip address is not personally identifiable - it has to be to deliver your pages - see what they say about changing browsers and deleting cookies. Not that it all revolves around the ip address. It does not have to be direct with facebook, and you can turn a blind eye to it if you like.

I know that the big corporate commercial use of the internet is working on aggregation of profiles and has been since before the internet. See the Big 3 credit reporting agencies, who was doing the reporting on your use of money? American Express used Caller ID in the 1070s long before it was available to consumers. They would greet you personally before you even said your name because your account was in front of them, that is if you called from your home or office. It seemed so personable and smart, but then consumers wanted the ability, but only after all the other big corporations had it too.

Many sites want to have Ads as a revenue model - that is up to them. Some folks think it is the gold rush. I might even put ads on a site too, it depends on the site. We have a great zikula module that pulls in the piwik analytics tool, it empowers Zikula site managers to come armed to the table with private data that would guard our visitors/members privacy or betray it if we so choose, that too would be up to the site owner. But it gives them leverage how to be able to charge for ads outside the dummy contract of affiliate services.

We will make everybody sick if we get into the router traffic monitoring done in the name of performance metrics.

Our traffic and our data and our content as site managers is a portion of the value in our sites, why give it away by letting a freeloader skim it off. But then I have yet to have a site that had a bump in traffic from other than a search engine. Still, I just don't believe the eyeballs viewing one of my sites, are mine. I am an advocate of Option In, not turn it on and make folks Option Out.
  • If you have problems with Facebook and their privacy policy, then don't create a facebook account.

It's a FACT that facebook is an excellent and free way to promote Zikula and Zikula modules.

Even though facebook is very very evil (perhaps even a third "very"), the benefits are massive.

    Sounds great!
I'm a noob and building my first zikula site. Can you please tell me what file should I open up and add this "addthis.com" code for News module?
I assume it's one of those in pntemplates folder but can't seem to figure this out.

Also is there any way to add the code to older news posts?
