Best forum module for zikula?  Bottom

Go to page 1 - 2 - 3 [+1]:

  • I searched the forums for any reference a forum module and all I see are mentions of pnforum or phpbb2 - the links all give 404 errors. So I wanted to know that the latest and greatest forum module was for zikula?
  • And another one is Zafenio (formerly known as PNphpBB2) http://code.zikula.org/zafenio - find links for sites using it there.

  • I strongly recommend Dizkus over Zafenio which is ultimately based on phpBB2 is a bag of security woes - there have been several dozen exploits for phpBB2 over the years, all of high severity. Dizkus is well supported and has a good track record so far.

  • Except for the datetimebrief bug in Dizkus that still isn't fixed.

I give you Exhibit A, this post. See below.

You cannot seriously compare those 2 - phpBB is one of the most popular web applications ever, while Dizkus is a niche product for Zikula users. And let me add, while there have been security problems with phpBB in the past (as with every popular web application), those have always been fixed with security updates very fast. All other problems known resulted from not upgraded, outdated installations.

PNphpBB2/Zafenio is based on phpBB code, but additionally profits from many Zikula security features, and receives additional security upgrades/patches as they are published by upstream. Therefore PNphpBB2 does have a clean track record for security since it's project start in 2002. The only known security warnings have been 2007 http://secunia.com/advisories/25480/ (which was actually a core Postnuke problem), and 2009 http://secunia.com/advisories/33365/ (which was invalid, as reported against an outdated version, and fixed long time before).

There are other good arguments to use Dizkus, specially for Zikula newcomers: It is much better integrated in Zikula, and comes with much less - probably confusing and not needed - features. And it's further development is secured better as Zikula core people are involved in the project.

PNphpBB2 is still widely used, and those who use it know why they want and need it. Please let's not frighten them with rumors about non-existing security issues.

    Greetings,
    Chris

  • I dont want to get into any long discussions about it, but for me personally, I've run a hosting company for 10 years and phpBB2 and it's forks have all been responsible for hundreds of various exploits. Local file execution, remote file download and local execute etc et al. Size of user base doesn't account for anything - look at Flash, look at Windows. So personal view is to strongly recommending users do not use anything based on phpBB2.

  • Security is of course important, but I've been running PNphpBB2 for years with no issues - no FUD arguments please.

That being said, PNphpBB2 is more feature-rich than Dizkus, and because of that might be your only option. For example, Dizkus doesn't support attachments per post.

  • I understand there is a new version of Dizkus on the way quite soon, Frank has been working on it.

  • Some years ago I switched from pnPHPbb2 to pnForum / Dizkus.
I noticed that pnPHPbb2 (now Zafenio) not only has more features many users missed afterwards in Dizkus - Zafenio is also more performant and decreases the server load of sites with a higher traffic.

Keeping the software up to date should solve the mentioned problems for BOTH forum modules (for example crashing a Diszkus installation with from bbcode usage was possible for a long time, please do not only point to problems of other forum software in this way).

    Just my 2 cents...

  • I think Zifeno has been abandoned. Not a loss though.

Why is it that anyone officially involved with Zikula is trying to kill Zafenio? Seriously. First Drak trying to scare everyone with fixed or non-existent security issues, now dks, and plenty of other topics as well ...

Think twice before killing the _only_ full-featured forum module for Zikula. While I appreciate the effort going into Diskuz, it lacks some basic functionality and is far from being a phpBB2 replacement.

Stop the childish attacks on Zafenio - and I admire Slam's professionalism in replying to this crap. I know I wouldn't be this patient.

So Slam, thanks for the work on Zafenio, and for sticking with this ungrateful crowd. I know many serious _users_ do use it and appreciate your work.

  • Hmm, someone deleted my last post. That's kinda odd. I say something nice for once and some bone head deletes it.
