I'm trying to find the best icon to use to indicate a 'private' item. What do you suggest?
so far, I've considered a lock (locked.png), a little blue person (personal.gif), a flag (flag.gif), keys (password.gif), among others. what do you suggest? (of course I could make something too if someone has a better idea)

A safe.
not a bad idea, but at the size I need (extrasmall) I don't think a safe would be feasible. -

An open eye for public, closed eye for private...distinct eyelashes will help it be nice and visible. -

Something like this:

A symbol (in this case it's a gallery) with a lock.

I don't want to use one for public. It would clutter the display.

that symbol itself is too big (needs to be smaller than 16px). But the lock idea is what I am currently using. Since it seems to be the current best option. -

A fine source: http://www.iconarchive.com/ - search for "private" and "secret", several very nice ideas there.

Nothing says private to me like a corset:

however, it might not inspire privacy. ;}
Though you have probably already settled this issue...
Is the icon only visible to the user whose private items need designation? why not let the user choose/upload their own icon to represent item "private" or use the users avatar
