Pagesetter Project in the CoZi  Bottom

  • I would like to start a project in the Cozi for Pagesetter. I'm not much of a PHP guy, but I think I can bring some things to the table. I do know that there is still quite the cult following of Pagesetter by many users of Zikula. Would any of you followers be interested in helping with the project?

I'm not necessarily looking to make big changes or anything like that. And I certainly don't think there would be much time needed by anyone (unless he/she wanted to, say, remove the need for Guppy or some other daunting task). But I do think some sort of maintenance is needed occasionally, such as conversion to gettext for compatibility with Zikula 1.2.

I think there is still enough interest in it to keep the fire burning and I'm not sure Pagemaster will ever get there (no offense intended, that's just my honest opinion). There are just too many things you can do with Pagesetter that you cannot do with Pagemaster or any other module.

So, is it worth my while to get a Cozi project started? I will probably do it anyway, but thought I'd check the forum for interest.

I for one can't imagine using Zikula without Pagesetter. If an upgrade to gettext is needed, I will do what I can to help as I almost exclusively use PS for the sites I make with Zikula. I'm sure I speak for a large portion of the community when I say that it is imperative that this gets done.

No offense to PM, but it is no PS.
  • I'd certainly be happy to lang review it and then re-insert the reviewed strings back into the code. I could help out with the gettext-ization, if needed.
  • How much work is needed to get Pagesetter updated vs how much is needed to get PageMaster there? Where is the energy best spent? Updating Pagesetter or enancing PageMaster? Both are GPL'd as far as I'm aware, you can get the source code of both and fork them, just asking.

  • Jorn has made it clear several times that he welcomes anyone that is interested to pick up Pagesetter and run with it.
  • Yes, but that doesn't answer the question, which is closer to where it needs to be, and therefore less work to finish/upgrade.

  • Welcome to capitalism, where competition is the name of the game. icon_razz

Seriously though, from my perspective, Pagesetter is clearly further along in terms of functionality. I think that with the existing base of users of Pagesetter, many of which are far more than just users, that together we could collaborate it into what Pagemaster is attempting to be. Whether or not that becomes reality, I still think Pagesetter needs to at least be kept up-to-date. If it becomes a competition between PS, PM and Content, so be it. I'm sure each would emerge with its own set of features and capabilities that allows Zikula users more choices.

I see my biggest part of the collaboration (at this point, anyway) to be the user interface. I can muddle around with PHP and have even written some of my own PHP scripts, but I'm not a seasoned PHP developer like others here. At the very least, I could see implementing my code into the SVN version so that at least someone else would have something to look at and improve. At least there could be a starting point. But at this point in time I think my stronger point would be to fix up the admin menus and overall layout.

Further, I can implement various plugins that have been contributed over the years, among other things. Many hacks have been provided to the core files that might well be good enough to incorporate permanently.
  • I say it's worth having a project to compile various changes.

I'm using Pagesetter still while keeping an eye on Pagemaster.

gettext conversion won't be required for Zikula 1.2. It should function "as is". For Zikula 2.0, it will be required, however.
  • I'm in.

For what it's worth, when Pagesetter ceases to work within Zikula I'll stop upgrading Zikula.

I'm not much help with the Zikula-heavy aspects of the code- I'm more adept at doing cool stuff with Pagesetter, zikula and what little coding I can whip up...

  • Ok, well, once the project is setup, I'll notify those interested and update here. icon_smile
  • It seems to me that Jorn also wrote quite good documentation for it, too. It's a shame we can't get him to be active in the project again. In any case, to bring the module up to date, we'd need to do the gettext conversion, review the strings, maybe revise the templates a little, and update the documentation. I'd be happy to help out with this work. Then we could see what further development might be worthwhile.
  • I have been using Pagesetter from my very first contact with Zikula about 5 years ago. I'm no coder and I am not certain what help I can give but will be happy to act as a tester.

  • I've created a project so I can convert it to use Gettext.

  • Pagesetter only keeps me here, so if Pagesetter ceases to work within Zikula I'll stop upgrading Zikula and will try migrate to Drupal where CCK and Views modules very similarity to Pagesetter functionality
