Upgrading from pn with pnphpbb

Hi, I've looked around but can't seem to find a definite answer on this. I am running a site with PN 0.7.2.3 and pnphpbb 1.2i-p3. I know I've waited too long to upgrade... long story. Anywhere, this is where I am now and obviously facing many problems because of it. One of the things I was afraid of was losing all my forum posts by upgrading to Zikula, but now it seems that that might now be the case. Is this true? Because if my forum will survive the process (at least long enough for me to find something to safely migrate it to), then I will go ahead and do the upgrade right away and be glad for it. TIA -

Haven't used this myself, but zafenio is the successor of pnphpBB. You can find more info on it here http://code.zikula.org/zafenio. It says 'It succeeds PNphpBB2, and provides a clean upgrade path from there.' -

First you should upgrade to PN 764. then use the 764->zikula112 migration distro. I believe that both pnForum/Dizkus and PNphpBB/Zafenio will upgrade from the old PNphpBB2. -

So basically, I can upgrade my site, the forums will still work, and then I can upgrade the forums to one of those new ones? Is that accurate? Because that'd be just great! -

I can confirm this will work. When Z1.0 came out, I upgraded from PN764. I was using PNphpBB2 at the time, and the only thing I had to do was to upgrade to the latest PNphpBB2 release (there's one release that's marked as "working with Zikula" - check the Zafenio site for details.
There's one other issue you need to be aware of: your post dates might not display correctly after the upgrade. I found the bug and posted a work-around in another topic, which other people have confirmed is working.
Finally, while the upgrade process works fine and you should definitely do it, be aware that "upgrading to one of the new ones" is not as straightforward as it sounds. There are two options:
- Dizkus is pretty good and is fully integrated with Zikula (and is used on this site) but misses some of the features from PNphpBB2 (for example, you can't attach and show attachments in a post; all attachments are displayed at the bottom of the topic page). But if Dizkus covers your need, it's a good option.
- PNphpBB3 / Zafenio obviously covers the PNphpBB2 features but is not available yet, and it's been a while since there has been a roadmap update. So no idea when it will become available.
That being said - your PNphpBB2 forums are safe, so definitely upgrade to Zikula!

Thanks for the replies everyone, and for all your advice, stef! I think what I will do is upgrade the site to 764, then the forums to Zafenio, because I think that helps with the transition from 764 to Zikula, then upgrade to Zikula. I hope that I can find that bug-topic you mentioned, because it's annoying enough that some of my users are shown to have joined in 1969! (This was when I migrated from pnphpbb1.4 to 2) (Hey! I just noticed that I am shown here on this forum to have registered in 1969!
)
Thanks again guys, I feel a lot better! -

here's the fix for the date problem: http://community.zikula.org/module-Forum-viewtopic-topic-55044.htm
Note: this fixes the bug where all months are the same. The registration date bug is something I another bug, there must be a fix for that one as I don't have that issue
If I remember correctly, this would be the correct upgrade path for you:
1. upgrade to PN764
2. Upgrade forum to PNphpBB2-1.2i-patch4 (this will work both with 764 and with Zikula)
3. Upgrade to Zikula
good luck,
stef
