How to set Category Tree to something other than Global  Bottom

  • I want to make seperate categories for helpdesk than I have for FAQ - (which is using Global). I added the category "helpdesk" under the Module category, but it is not showing up anywhere other than "View" categories, so that I can create any kind of registry for it, or add more categories under it. Did I choose the wrong settings when I added it? I really don't understand anything about the fields when adding a category, such as locked, leaf node, value, & sort value, and there is no place that tells me about these fields or what to do with them.

I've tried to search for answers and the closest thing I've found is about setting the "leaf" helpdesk as a "tree" in registries. That sounds like what I need to do, But it doesn't say exactly HOW to do this.

I have read the Wiki on CategoriesAdmin, but it isn't much help. It explains WHAT it can do, but not so much HOW to do it.

Can someone explain a little clearer for me, exactly how to make this happen?

Also -How should I determine where to set the root category for user categories, or the default user category? There is nothing that tells me what this does or what it is for. I am using very few modules to build a type of customer service center. So I'm guessing it would probably be either the categories for the helpdesk, or the FAQ. - Or should I be using User, for the Users?

Does the system need all of those other Categories that come with the package? Or can I delete them?

Some guidance on this would really be appreciated.
    Thanks for your help!

Just a note - it would be so much easier to find information in this Forum, if the search accepted MORE than 20 characters! - Might save a lot of people a LOT of time!

    Thanks again. icon_confused

  • I think your issue with the first part is you need to configure the module to use a specific category in the category register. Try that.
  • I tried - that's my problem... I want helpdesk to be the category. I added the category with Modules as the Root, but it won't show up in my choices on the registry page, therefore I cannot set it!

  • I don't know what to tell you. Categories are kinda tricky and I don't fully understand them to be honest. Mateo knows a lot about them but I haven't seen him in a long time.
  • For real. There's just too much guesswork in the categories, not to have good documentation on it.

i think i may have part of it figured out. I just started checking & unchecking things to see what happened. I unchecked the leafnode on the helpdesk category I created, and it started showing up in the registry. So I set the helpdesk root category to the helpdesk category I made. It looks right now, but I haven't been able to test it yet. Thanks for your help.
