Dropbox Uploader Class  Bottom

  • I've got too many things in play right now to try and figure out the best way to make use of this, but it seems like something that would be useful for some users in just about any file related module.

    DropBoxUploader Class

If you don't know what Dropbox is, it's a file sync service. It works on Windows, Mac & Linux. You install a little program that monitors a specified folder and it will upload files to the Dropbox server automatically. ANy other computer that is connected to the same dropbox will auto download new/updated files, keeping files in sync across multiple computers. There are a myriad of uses. I have 3 accounts, one is personal, one for the family and one for the business. The personal one keeps files I need at Church synced up between the laptop and home computers. The family one I have the photos from our road trip in, which also creates a web album to share with anyone, the grandparents can, in theory, set up the program on their computers, and when I have new pics of the grandkids, I can save them to the dropbox, and their computers will be instantly be updated with new pics. There was a recent article from MaxiumPC that had a few tricks to get the most out of Dropbox. If you use multiple PCs you can put your MyDocuments folder in the dropbox and have it where ever you go, your Thunderbird and Firefox profiles can be kept on it so that your Extensions, e-mails, etc are all syncronized across computers. It's a pretty handy tool.
You get 2 GB free (Plus 250 MB extra for both of us if you use the referal link above or in my sig) or they have paid plans for 50 or 100 gigs (9.99/mo for 50 19.99/mo for 100).

  • Was looking into it actually yesterday. The movie tutorial looked really nice.

I'm using MobileMe from apple at the moment which also offers access to files from other places, but no automatic syning like in drop box (and not free, but it has other advantages as well icon_wink )

  • I just got my dad set up with it tonight, to share the pics from our road trip. Unfortunatly, since I had him log in to the family account first, when he signed up for his own, it didn't give me credit for it :(( Works well for what I've used it for so far. I love that it works on Windows, Mac & linux, since my lap top is Ubuntu. I haven't looked at the code for the class yet, but depending on what it can do, could be a nice way to work with files.
