Which theme to use?  Bottom

  • My current theme is based on the unfortunately buggy Seabreeze. I am looking for a new theme to substitute; my Smarty skills are pretty close to zero, and my CSS skills are, well, I can work with manual in hand.

What I am looking for is, frankly, something similar to Seabreeze: Bar across the top for the logo and a few buttons, 3 column, full screen width (I am not really sure the reason behind the popularity of themes with thick left and right margins; a lot of people do not have widescreen monitors).

I am not asking for anybody to do research, but if you are already using such a theme or know of one without having to look it up, I'd appreciate knowing about it, rather than loading a couple of dozen themes and trying each one individually.

    Thanks!

  • easiest way is to look through the themes in the extension database. I know that sounds like a cop out a little, but how are we to know your tastes? Check here. I know this because I just had to go thru and select a couple new ones myself. it doesn't take long.

That's what I started with. The problem is that there are a few where the screen shots look like they use the whole screen, but when I click on the demo versions, they have margins on the side (parenthetically, can anybody tell me why wasting a big chunk of screen space is considered to be a good idea?).

I know it appears to be SOP on many CMS sites, but a lot of my potential viewers have older or narrow screen monitors, where the side margins would render things like the forums virtually unreadable).

  • Hi,
on zikulathemes.com you can test drive the themes and view screenshots.

Just an example, the kubick open source theme:

  • Thanks espaan; that gives me the ability to check out for myself. I think I'm going to start the question of margins on a separate thread.
