Split: Themes Included with Zikula  Bottom

  • dks

Personally, I think Seabreeze should be revamped or removed from the next release of Zikula.

Could be done with 2.0 in theory. Further opinions about that?

  • Let's be honest.... Andreas08 and Voodoo are not exactly nice themes either. If we can sort the licensing out for BlankTheme, it's probably the most ideal option.

  • And there are plenty of Opensource converted themes in zikulathemes.com.
For example in the blueish area: Deliciously Blue, Even_Tastier_Blue or Kubrick (blog theme icon_wink )
Why not pick a few from that lot (no licensing issues to sort out AFAIK) and already converted to Xanthia.
Pick some Blog, Nature, bussiness, simple, very graphic (or what not) themes and pack those.
As much as I like BlankTheme of course (and the KIS theme listed by Mateo is a fine example icon_wink ) it should be very clear what license issues there are.

The themes being delivered with Zikula are just not on the same level as Zikula is IMHO. Just my 0.02?
They are not a showcase of Zikula (again IMHO). And for example the Demo uses already a much nicer theme (BlankTheme base icon_wink ) for showcasing Zikula.

Yup. I am not really sure we should be distributing three themes with the core either. We need the RSS/Atom etc and one generic theme that shows off the theme engine as an example for theme authors. We dont need more than that in a Core release. Also less for us to maintain. We have the extdb now so it's easy for users to find variety.

  • Sounds like a good idea to keep just one simple/good theme in the Core and add some nice relevant themes to the various distributions (as they are being developed).

OT: @Darryl - Nice looking box of cigars!

I took that picture, which is a box of Monte Cristo #5s fresh from Cuba, which are my personal favorites. I'm smoking a Romeo Y Julieta Churchill right now accompanied by a bottle of Taylor Fladgate 10 year and a variety of tasty cheese. For next while, my life it TOTALLY better than all of yours :)
  • I have to confess when I was in university I had an addiction for reading Private Eye while smoking cigars and drinking Dr Pepper. We used to many cheese and wine affairs too! Oh I miss the days...

  • I was messing with another CMS, Joomla I *think*, that had a theme downloader within the administration. Until we have something similiar, I think the included themes count should remain at 3 or so user themes.
  • I agree with Drak here that just one default theme is enough to be included in the core. But: the license must be 100% GPL compatible (which will never happen with BlankTheme, even modules like Scribite do struggle to find proper legal ground), it should demonstrate some of the most important features of Xanthia3 in an easy understandable way - and it must look extremely sexy and perfect. It will be what people see first from Zikula, and it will be what everyone will use as a screen shot when writing about it.

    Greetings,
    Chris

  • Thinking about this
we should ask to some "open web designers" to a contest for the new Zikula default theme, it would be cool to have some professional work on it,
and convert it to Xanthia 3 is a piece of cake...
so, an open contest and email to the designers we know? icon_smile
    prize: the backlink, as usual

    Mis principios... son mis fines
  • (I split this topic)

I think whatever theme is included (and I agree one is a good idea - other than Printer, atom, etc), it should be the finiest example of the power of pnRender and Theme 3.0. I think the BlankTheme project is excellent, but it adds another layer on top of those technologies and makes it a bit more difficult to understand. The included Master theme should be simpler, but demonstrate the power of the core theming system.
  • Over all, I think we have to keep the current themes in 1.x and think about these changes for 2.0 because these are core themes and we have a duty to maintain them for a given period.

While theme contests are nice, they often don't work... I think the whole thing flopped several times when we tried in the past. I would have more confidence in having a theme designed commercially for the project. That way we get exactly what we need in a specified amount of time and no restrictions.

  • Perhaps a theme contest just for the hell of it?
If the thoughts are to not change the default theme until 2.0 then there's a possibility (but not a promise) of including the "winning" theme in 2.0.
Perhaps the Zikula Foundation could pony up a huge cash prize and make it in Canadian dollars so it sounds BIGGER.
