After months of being skittish, I decided to finally upgrade my site from PN 0.764 to Zikula.
I downloaded Zikula-1.1.1-Upgrade-Distro-scribite.zip and followed the directions, deleting my PN files and uploading the Zikula files. And when I tried to run the upgrade script, I got a 500 internal server error that said something about bad configuration (sorry, I can't remember the specifics, I was pretty tired by this time).
I checked and double checked and triple checked my config.php file, making the changes as directed in the documentation. No good. After several hours of frustration, I just restored my backups.
Any suggestions?

Delete the .haccess of the root folder of your site
some servers doesn't accept the PHP directives there
and try again
