postnuke vs phpnuke  Bottom

  • Hi all,

Can someone explain to me the difference between phpnuke and postnuke? Why would someone choose to you one over the other?

    Thanks

    Ryan,

Bearing in mind that this is a biased view i'll tell you what you get with PN that I believe are key differences to PN.

Truly open source - You access the current development from the CVS at developers.postnuke.com

Modular and Standard based coding - All PN modules are required to be self contained and not make any core changes. Developers are provided with documentation to develop modules to these standards. Hooks (very much under developer at the moment) allow module developers to consume standard parts of the PN framework within thier modules (e.g. ratings, comments etc.) providing a cosistent feel to your site.

Support - this support forum is staffed by an developer supported support team (pnCorps). The pnDevs team also contribute directly to the support of the product.

Bug tracking - PN has bug tracker at the developers site so users can report, track and monitor product defects.

Security - PN has a much better (and always improving) track record of response to security issues.

Project Managed - PN has a defined roadmap and thus there is a degree of change control in place to ensure that the stability and direction of the product is maintained. The roadmap can be found at [rul]http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/post-nuke[/url].

Permissions - The PN permissions system allows a site admin to configure access rights to various parts of the site to differerent users or groups of users.

Again I stress that this is my personal opinion.

For those curious, I posted the same question on phpnuke's forum:

The roadmap can be found at http://www.sourcefor…/projects/post-nuke.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it... Where's the roadmap?

In the docs section of the project site. Direct URL to here is http://sourceforge.n…man/?group_id=27927.

  • Cool--thanks. I didn't expect it to be under documentation. Too bad there's not a timeline. I guess these things are hard to predict.

Hmmm... Seems to be down now. I followed the link the other day. Unfortunately, their argument consisted mostly of 'We're the grand-daddy of CMSes.' I was going to try to elicit a little more detail, but the connection kept timing out. Doesn't bode well! :D

A timeline is something you won't find in most open source projects as all will not ship a release unless they believe it to function as expected so timelines don't serve any purpose.
