I'd like to find a reasonably-priced helper to move to Zikula from PN  Bottom

  • Hey guys, I've just been too-far removed from the great advances made from the last stable PN version which I built my appleproaudo.com site in, and I am completely over my head now trying to both upgrade to Zikula, make sure my original theme or something like it (maybe something better?) and any legacy or better modules are in place to keep it going as it runs now. I know there are some wonderful folks in this community who've helped me with little things over the past (GASP1) six years of using PN now, brilliant minds like Simon, Mark, Vanessa and others (you know who you are!). I need to just pay somebody to help me migrate the site, make sure I'm using the best solutions for what the site currently does, can offer some advice on new modules/blocks, etc to make what we do better, and maybe even theme suggestions. The advertising market in pro audio has taken a real dump, so I'm on an extremely limited budget, but I'm willing to invest out of my pocket in this for the right help. Maybe with the right facelift to the site, the new Zikula install and some gentle guidance to bring me current I can get some advertisers to start paying again (which they're not doing any longer with the economy in the dumper). So, any of you long-time PN/Zikula folks want to look at the site, get in touch and give me a ball-park quote on helping me get up to snuff so I can stay with Zikula? I've been a PN guy for so long now, I hate to leave the group and start over with a new CMS, but the evolution is so far past what I've kept up with that I feel overwhelmed right now and almost think I should start over, at which point I'm tempted to start looking at other CMS solutions as well. So, somebody make me a offer I can't refuse to get my site back on track and something the Zikula community will want to point to as a cool site using this CMS. Best to email me directly rather than replying here, please use lawson music media at g mail dot com to reach. Look forward to hearing from some of my long lost pals here. I'm still around, folks, but I've been awfully quiet here as I marvel at what you've been doing. You can see what else I'm involved in at lawsonmusicmedia.info (and check out my crazy cartoon bluesman alter ego in Second Life at vonjohin.com.

  • consider posting the job for bids at Zikula Pro
  • Good advice. I would definitely bid on it if you post it there - always found your site a fine example for what's possible to do with PN, and now ZK. We often also build teams on bids there in order to create good results.
    Greetings,
    Chris

  • The more comprehensive you describe the included tasks/components, the more bids you will get probably, as people need some kind of specification to be able to create an all-inclusive offer.

  • Of course, I guess I can go post there, but four responses here, so it seemed redundant. :) I will look over there and see if its easy enough for a guy like me to deal with, but meanwhile see what this posting generates. I know a lot of smart and talented folks, some of whom might want to work on it but aren't "pros" who would not deal with the other site, read this place, so this was my first thought on looking for help, and of course, out of habit, because I have rarely ever asked for help in the PN forum and gone without it. I figured I got both pros and non-pros looking here.

I stuck with PN and now Zikula for so long through thick and thin, because the community around it is amazing. Off to enjoy Memorial Day. Look forward to hearing from more folks. Thanks, ya'll!

  • I'm going through this myself right now, for a fairly complex .764 site to zk 1.1.1. I will say that the zikulapro site badly needs to be updated. Lots of very old sites linked to, some of them dead.

My cutover is scheduled for tomorrow. I've gone through the conversion steps twice with copies of the data and there are about 110 steps (yes, I just counted). They are all small steps though, and I anticipate that the whole process will take about 6 hours (3 minutes per step, approx.). Generally speaking, he most work will be in setting up lots of blocks to the new "zoneless" approach and updating old modules. Many of the old modules still worked but we want to take this opportunity to jump to the latest & greatest.
  • Just to follow up, it took me about 4.5 hours to follow my script, and the site is now upgraded. Yea! icon_biggrin
  • Bronto, this is why I need to just hired somebody to do it, because its gotten over my head now. I hung in there for several revs of PN and still love this CMS, but I need to get somebody to do this update for me, and help me make sure the theme is working, the content in my DB is still working in any new versions of the modules, etc. I haven't had a chance to post on the "pro" site yet, and hopefully anyone looking at this who is interested in the work isn't waiting for me to post there to get in touch.

The spec is pretty simple: Update the site to the latest stable Zikula. Test all current active modules/blocks, etc to make sure they work in new Zikula install. Advise on current features that can't work in existing modules, suggest new module solutions if known and where possible. Make sure theme works in new Zikula. Migrate data from older modules to modern models as and if needed. Make suggestions on better ways to do things currently done on the site using new features in Zukula. Click on EVERYTHING and make sure it works and report back what doesn't work that you can't fix.

Short of that, I have a new install of Zikula on a space on my server. I could start from scratch I guess, and maybe hire somebody to migrate DB date for me, 'cause I flat out SUCK at trying to do that. I screw it up every time. :)

I have a dedicated server where the work can be done.

  • PM sent.
  • Thanks to those who replied. I'm afraid the dev work is out of my price range at $40-60 an hour. Not saying that's not a fair price, just saying its more than I can swing for a site that just doesn't generate that much money for me. I'm going to limp along at .764 as long as I can while I decide if I can muster enough courage to attempt the upgrade myself again, or start over on the site from a new Zikula install on another virtual server, rebuilding from the ground up, or even perhaps abandoning Zikula and going with something else now. The new stuff really left me behind knowledge-wise, and its not an easy update for a hack like me. :)

  • Stick with Zikula. It's actually easier once you understand it, and most of your data will probably convert automatically. Your biggest work will probably be converting your theme, and while it's work the new theme system is much simpler and intuitive than the old system.
