Migrate or start from fresh?  Bottom

  • Hi All,
We have had a working intranet built on postnuke running for approx 5 years but we don't have the internal know how to improve it at this stage. It is running on a redhat box that no-one knows how to maintain and we don't have a disaster recovery option on this machine if it dies. We have had a couple of very close calls where it has fallen over and thankfully come back to life.

My question is, would it be easier to update the current redhat instance to Zikula to bring it into line with today's look and feel or would it be better to start from scratch?

I don't mind having a go at doing either but I assume I will need a fair bit of help. I have setup a test version of a new one and have been playing for a couple of days and there are some things that were 'custom created' for us that I don't know how to 're-build' on a new system (or transfer if that is possible).

One thing that I am currently stuck on is a module that allows us to post a news article but all it is, is a pdf, of which, the first page is displayed on the home page and the user can then scroll through the entire pdf doco without having to download the document separately. I think this was done using iframe or something but having only a beginner level knowledge of web development, I'm not sure if this is the ONLY thing that is required to get it working.

Looking for recommendations on which way to move.

    Any assistance would be welcomed.
  • I think it is difficult to answer for you because only you know how important the old stuff is. If it is really important to keep the archive of old stuff then you need to go the upgrade route. You didn't say which version of PostNuke you have running. If it is .764 then you can use the special upgrade distribution to get it up to zikula 1.1.1.

It sounds like the pdf module you describe is custom, but someone else may know better. If it is, it may still work - some older modules make the crossover OK.

what other modules are you using?
  • The first thing you might want to do is look at existing modules that may do what you need. It would mean learning and implementing a new system, but maybe they are worth a look. There's a pretty extensive collection of intraweb modules available by one developer.

In the Extensions area of this site, you will find:
    http://community.zik…rpage=10&comptype=1
You will see that there are only a few listed there. HOWEVER, check out the CoZi:
    http://code.zikula.org/intraweb/wiki
You will notice that some links are dead in the Cozi, but there is some information there about the modules. Also click on the "Browse Source" link and look under "Modules" -- there's a ton of modules there that might suit your needs.

All that said, I have never used any of these modules and cannot vouch for their abilities or quality. I do believe that they are used by a particular company for their intraweb, so it seems to me that they must work pretty good.
  • The intraweb modules are being used for a lot of Catalan schools AFAIK. Check out demo here (in spanish BTW icon_wink )
and the others said it already.

  • You migth also consider to ask for professional help at ZikulaPro where people can bid for jobs you offer. You might also add the operating system tasks to do there, some of us there are offering pro server support on OS level, too.
If you have enough work (and budget) for a couple of days, I would also be able/willing to fly in.
    Greetings,
    Chris

  • Many thanks to you all for your responses. I will consider all comments and make a decision. The professional option sounds good, depending on the price of course (The Chief financial officer holds his pen close to himself).
I'm excited about moving forward and covering our exposure to disaster. Zikula looks great and i'm sure there are hundreds of new modules that we can implement in our business.

    Again, thank you all.
