What does a group's "state" control ?  Bottom

  • I've just had a user ask me what it means that the groups' state are set to "closed". I have no idea, the Group's part of the docs Wiki is blank, and searching on "group state closed" found nothing.

Just what does a group's state actually mean ?
  • Hi Chris,

I believe the closed state is just that.. that group is closed. You cannot freely join or subscribe or become a member of that group.. Probably something that is not used a lot, but for multi-group community site, it has much potential.

But test it: Create a group that is open, and check the site.tld/index.php?module=Groups or whatever.. (look at the templates) and see.

  • What i see
is that any user can apply to normal Groups
but can't send an application to a closed one...

  • I've been known to be oblivious icon_smile but I don't recall the concept of applying to groups at all from PostNuke.

I played with it a bit. This looks like an aspect that could use some docs from someone who really understands how it should be used.
  • As a function of the core Groups module, it didn't exist in PostNuke. pnGroups was the first module to provide the function, the initial version was written by me, and was a replacement to the groups module, the 2.0 version was done by Chestnut, building off of the concepts I introduced, and was an add on to Groups, and as of Zikula 1.0 it's a core feature of groups (meaning it's functionally identical to pnGroups) I'll see what I can do tomorrow on some documentation for it. I didn't have anything to do with the new groups module, other than introducing the concepts, but as I say, it seems to be pretty much functionally the same module (Which was the clients desire when he contracted me to write it, that it become a core feature).

  • What I don't know the use for is the "Core" type. I can figure that Pubic is shown and private not, but what about core.

  • Okay, initial commit of some details added to the Wiki now.. Once I get clarification on what the "core" type does, I'll update it and clean it up a bit. But it's after 1AM, I was working the kitchen for 12 hrs yesterday and had a sick baby keeping me up all night so I'm not as clear headed on the writing at the moment :)
