How to display banners  Bottom

  • Hi,

Could someone tell me what I would put in my home template to get the Banners module to display?

    Thanks if so. icon_smile

  • I found out:

    Code

    <!--[pnbannerdisplay id=0]-->

('id' changes according to the id you assigned your banner set.)

  • Could also use a block..

  • Michael, could you possibly give a very summary/telegraphic explanation of what you'd do?

  • What's to explain, there's a display block for Banners just as there's the code you referenced. Depending on the site's needs both work.

  • Instead of using the old Banner module, I can really recommend the usage of OpenX, which comes with a fine backend, tons of options, features and several easy ways to display your banners. You can either have it hosted for free (up to 100 million impressions/month) on their servers, which is easy and painless, or host it yourself, which gives you more control, but also does need some knowledge and more than a cheap hosting space.

I also offer professional managed hosting solutions with Zikula and OpenX.

    Greetings,
    Chris

  • There are certain features that IMHO don't require to be part of Zikula. That is for example webstats and banners. There are very professional solutions around like piwik or open web analytics for webstats and openx for advertisement. A

As there are only few people who need access there can be extra logins. Moreover the systems can easily be hosted on different servers.

  • Chris, Steffen,

There are certainly packages that do the same thing as Stats and Banners, with many more features. But not everybody needs those extra features.

Plus, outside packages need to be installed, maintained, themed, and provide an added security risk to deal with.

Banners is a simple module integrated with Zikula, that fulfills a simple need. Stats provides a simple, integrated solution to give some quick eye candy statistics to your visitors.

With PostNuke, the idea was to provide a whole bunch of integrated add-ons for your website that were quick and easy to use. The PN package gave you a complete, working website out of the box. Many people would just add forums and a gallery, and would have all they needed

Zikula's come a long way since then, but certain things have changed. You couldn't recommend it to a beginner at this time. It's powerful and flexible, but you have to spend a lot more time building your site before you achieve your aims. Plus, at the present time, it looks pretty mediocre right out of the box. I'm sure these things will change over time.

But I think it's a pity not to maintain some of those old modules in at least working condition... They were simple, working solutions to immediate needs.

Anyway, I know the design outlook of the devs has changed totally from the original aims of PN. But look at the community that was lost. Many of the new design aims are merit-worthy but, IMHO, in some respects the project took its eye off the ball and forgot some basic considerations.

Me, personally, I love using Zikula and I'm building 3 sites at this time. But many people don't feel the same.

    Look at http://code.zikula.org/parked/timeline
And now repeat that those modules are not maintained...

OK, sorry for the misunderstanding, Axel! icon_wink I really meant, 'It would be a pity if they were not to be maintained'. I do monitor what happens in SVN, and I see your work going in. It's good to see this. And now, of course, Stats, Credits and Banners have every chance of staying live, usable extensions. And other outsourced modules too, when other people step forward to help maintain them with you.

But it's basically what I've read from the SC many times in the lists/forums that led me to believe that you guys were just looking to drop them all and wait for 3rd-party devs to develop replacements... What Steffen commented above was the kind of thing I mean. (Of course, he's entitled to express his personal opinions -- but then it might be a good idea not to always sign things 'Member of the Zikula Steering Committee', because it looks a bit like 'the official line', at least to me). icon_wink

  • At least there will be no further release of such modules by the official core devs. Indeed they are waiting for adoption. But this does not mean that we do not care for them. The difference to point out is that they won't get that much new features implemented, until they get a new maintainer. The only thing we do is that we apply all architectural changes to them in order to simplify the adoption process for third party developers.

That is already a great help. Before I volunteered, I didn't know that you'd give this valuable help... Maybe a short little blog posting laying out your principles on this subject?
