I don't drop by the forums here all that often, anymore, just now and again, primarily to see how PostNuke is "evolving" - if that's the right word for it.
The forums here used to be one of my favorite on the Internet, a few years back, and I spent many a day here using this site's forums to glean and learn bits and pieces about PostNuke.
It appears that the forum layout has changed, again, since my last visit here, and its current incarnation is absolutely horrid. Maybe it is what some consider to be progress, but it's nowhere near as intuitive and user-friendly as the forums here were back when I first discovered PostNuke and this website, by extension.
The grotesque forum layout aside, I would like to toss out an Ahoy! to Hammerhead for old time's sake, if he is still around. I hope that all is well with you, and thanks, again, for all of your assistance to me all those many moons ago.

Welcome home GlueBeard :) Simon is still around, in fact he was recently named as HarryZ's replacement on the Foundation's Board, so now he's one of the big wigs :)
Mateo, GlueBeard goes back even before the PNphpBB2 based forums, I presume he's more familiar with the phpBB style of forum layout, so that's where he's coming from. Someone more comfortable with that would think this is atrocious probably, I think that layout sucks personally, but that's why there's more than one option for people.

Hi Hal,
I was visiting your site a little while ago. How have you been?
I'm quite used to many different types of forums. My own distaste for the layout in use here, now, aside, the forums here don't seem to be anywhere nearly as busy as they used to be. Where I am "coming from" on the forums here is the way it is laid out and structured. It used to be a great forum, especially for just browsing and trying to learn. Now, it's more akin to a torture device. Just so unwieldy! It needs a new theme, also. Maybe Mars could be persuaded to give the forums a face lift. Lord knows, it's certainly in need of one.
That aside, Hammerhead's (Simon) the primary one from these forums that I remember by name, although a few other names are recognizable from what little browsing that I have done this trip around.
I see that ColdRolledSteel's website is down. I think that it was down the last time that I visited. I also checked out Nate Welch's website, but he doesn't blog to often there. He always seemed to me to be a fairly sharp cookie, when it came to PostNuke's technical side.
It's a shame that Simon hasn't fixed this place up a bit in my absence, but he's likely busy doing something or other. I did notice a little earlier, tonight, that Simon is a full voting member, or something, of that Foundation's board. The board never really seemed to do much, anyway, so maybe it is a comfy job for Simon, these days.
At any rate, it's late here, and I've got to head to bed. Take it easy, Hal.

hello
about the forum, don't you think you're a bit old fashionned ? the type of person to say it was good six years ago ...
do you at least think about people who spend time to port this template to zikula and develop this module ?
it's just too easy, you come here to take news about old friends, that's cool, really!
but that's not a reason to "deny" the work of others. (yes , "deny" is perhaps a too strong word ...)
Sorry to bother in your meeting, that's was not the goal.
Mumu, an "happy user of the forum"

Hi everybody.
If you think that the layout is "absolutely horrid", well, its your opinion.
The layout is simple and easily, quickly, and the colors are "sweet".
But, always, you can create a new template for your forum, true?
The community, Zikula, use this. Any problem?
Bye. -

Hi Gluebeard, sorry to be late to drop by. I saw the title of this forum thread and thought it might be you!
I'm still around, though sadly my work on Zikula has become mostly behind the scenes stuff now - I don't get much time for the forums these days, as this summer I graduate from university and start a real job.
I'm a little sad you don't like our new layout, because I personally think the site has never been easier to navigate and use. I think we still need to do some work, especially on making the best use of our right-hand column (and I'm looking for an artist to design some side buttons), but overall I think we're making good progress.
The forums used to be busier, but Zikula is almost starting from scratch in terms of recognition. We've tried to make a clean break from the PostNuke code and project, the code was hard to maintain, and not competitive with modern system's feature sets despite having a large following.
Zikula has the opposite problem - it's one of the best systems out there, but has a small following - though that is certainly changing.
Obviously we're always happy to have new contributors - I have a list of things as long as my arm which need doing and I hope to get the time to do it some day! In the meantime though, I leave it to other capable people like Mateo and Michael to keep the project ticking over day to day in the forums.

Nice to see that long time users of PN are still here
And I must admit, the forum looks prefectly ok to me. But it's a matter of taste
I for one have never liked the very busy crowded phpBB kind of forums. But once again matter of taste

Gluebeard-
I've been around for a while too. Don't know if you will recognize my name (you may remember pnBloodhound...) anyway - if you were to be VERY SPECIFIC in your criticism of the forum, you might be helpful in the ongoing improvement of the project. nobody can do anything with a comment like "horrid layout." what do you want? specifics can be helpful, generic comments (even positive ones) are less useful. -

To me the forum looks great, I really really love this theme (also if I prefer the version with more buttons
) and I think that they guy who created it for phpbb3 is a really good designer!
But erik is right, it's just a matter of taste

my only input on this is that ive been using PN (now zikula) for about 5 years or so, and i have seen a lot of improvements since then... this new forum i really like, however the bugs need to be worked out
the forums are a lot quieter then they used to be... posts that would have gotten a lot of replies in a short period of time now take days to get any useful help, and for new users or new developers that's a big turnoff
I'm not blaming anyone for that its just that there's not a big enough following and im stumped on how to bring the number of users up, working out some of the kinks in the new releases will help... but without something spectacular most people will stick to a well-known name.
for instance i developed a site for my department at university and the web service people at the university were pretty much refusing to host zikula pressuring for joomla, mostly because they had heard of it before. -

Funny really, I remember tho old PN forums full of "help, can't log in" type posts where here I feel that the discussions are really focused more on the bleeding edge of Zikula's potential.
In any event I can't express how muck more pleasing (as a graphic designer) it is to use this site over the old PN...

Beside the lost of activity there is also another aspect to consider here:
In the early days many support threads related to things like "how can I customize the display style of this heading?" or "where can I change the position of those dates?".
These topics are gone since people recognized that they can customize everything in templates without having to touch code. Other threads covered similar (repeated) questions.
You have to see that this project has made a long way. Naturally not everything is perfect though. But people were and are answering questions, fixing bugs, adding features, ASO. So many many basic things are simply "finished". I think this is what remmingtonshowdown meant with the bleeding edge's focus of current discussions

HORRID, UGLY, NICE COLORS, whatever... there are now 6 billion smart little creatures conquering our blue planet. Can we create a forum looks that suites every taste?
Shouldn't we rather concentrate on the original means of a "support" forum, instead?
