Suggestion for downloading modules, extensions...etc  Bottom

  • i have seen this done on other things, but it would be really cool / useful. could help users to easily find modules they wish.

it would be cool if under the "modules" module there was an "add extension" option, and it could directly link with the extension database here at zikula and list off/ search for new modules from the users own site, check off to download/install that module, click install and the website will download it and install the module itself... no downloading it to your computer and ssh or ftp'ing it up to your server then regenerating modules and installing... just select it and install.

also would be cool to see the ability to install a module from an archive (zip, rar, bz, whatever) where you can select the file from your computer (the exact file downloaded from the extensions database here) and just tell it to install, the site figures out for itself whats included in that archive (modules, themes etc) and installs them all.

i think that would be a huge step in making the system more user friendly!
  • Thank you for your suggestions!

IIRC, this option has already been discussed on the discussions list and indeed is a very good feature. Problems are at this moment the security: We advise to have no writable directories within the public accessible directories (and therefore have pnTemp outside the site root for example). But installing extensions this way in a themes or modules directory requires the directory to be writable for the webserver. As most shared hosting environments then require public write access to this directory (777), this is a security hole.

Solution is to use some integrated ftp client (like most adminpanels have) in the Modules module, that requires credentials by the admin. Then the system could use ftp for file transfer and storage.

These are all ideas, but require someone to actually pick up and invest time in. The latter is one most people do not have, given the current priority list within the zikula-sites.

  • Something like this has already been implemented basically. Drak included an auto updater into the 1.2.0 core development line. Did not test it out in detail yet, but just wanted to let you know icon_wink

See #766 and #394 for more information.

i'm not a fan of FTP at all, it might be better if something like this was done in SSH or atleast a secure ftp.
anyway im glad to hear theres an autoupdate, good feature, i've seen ones where you can select from releases or you can auto-update off the SVN to get development updates too...but that might not be practical for this.
  • Have to work to the lowest common denominator. Most people are going to have FTP access, but may not have SSH or SFTP.
