Just thought I'd share one of my sites...

Built for my cycling team, the goals of the site were to create a CMS that would allow all members of the team (users) the ability to submit news, race reports, create events and submit results all the while keeping in mind that the interface needed to be consistent and dead-simple-such that even a bike racer could use it ;)

The site is all Pagesetter and Mediashare. Almost all the content on the site is relational in that almost every publication be it a race report, race result, calendar event or photo is related to another item. Photos, results, and reports that are related to a race will automatically appear in context, etc... Likewise a user's content will appear on his profile page including photos tagged with his name. A user can simply submit content and the site will manage it's association and how it is tied to other content on the site...

Dozens of custom plugins and a helluva lot of Smarty was used to make the site operate like I wanted but overall it was a very fluid implementation with the rare exception.

The site has very few dead-ends with respect to navigation. That is, within each page there's often a link to take a visitor to related content based on what they are looking for... imagine each page as a room with multiple exit doors that lead into more rooms in turn with multiple doors...rarely is there a room without a door; no dead ends. The goal of this is to keep visitors in and on the site without forcing them to return to any dedicated start page...

The google analytics show that the average time-on-site (during race season) is upwards of 15mins... that's 15 mins of exposure to our team and our sponsors such that 42% of exits are through one of our sponsor's links...they love to see that data!

As it's my cycling team the site is always a work in progress and a chance to test out new bells and whistles such as a module to accept emails or SMS and process them and post them to Pagesetter... so a racer could SMS his 2nd place finish to the site and it would process and post the content accordingly!

  • Very nice! I like the fact that it has some really nice images but yet the layout is simple and elegant. It makes the images more of a prevalent feature, which is what I think you want.

What are you using for the calendar? The URL calls it as a module called "schedule" but I've never heard of it. Is it custom?
  • Thanks Wendell, as with most things (cyclists in particular) folk just want to look at pictures... ;)

The calendar is based on pgcalendar (renamed "schedule" in the Modules module)with the standard event display replaced by a series of inlineLists and custom smarty/pagesetter plugins...

  • Great. The coloring and pictures are nice (a minor remark, the actual content is rather far below, you have to scroll to get there).
