Hello,
im working on a new module called "tournament"
It makes it possible to create stategy-or other game tournaments.
I didnt find anything like this in the internet... well Electronic-gaming-league.. but they have problems with "rights" etc and their code is hidden... that sucks hard.
So i made me on work to write a own module for zikula!
There are now about... 60-70 hours of work inside (work means i learned a lot!!! i never wrote anything in PHP or HTML up to now....)
There are still coming again 50 hours of work for me + Beta-Testing
Hey, im a university-student, so i have some time ;)
What do you think? Should i try to sell this module? should i upload it here for free? Or will it be to uncompatible for other sides? (i dont think so.. i will test it in betatesting)
you see the work on http://www.dedk.de in the menu "tournaments"
Feel free to register (you can log in instant) and look around - but you dont need to register
I would be happy if somebody tells me if he finds any errors in my work - its not ready yet, but the most of the interface is done
One Question: My pnuser.php file has 60kb now.. and it will go up to 100kb - is this too much? Does everybody who visit the side need to "download" 100kb or does the script work on the server? I am very sorry.. i dont know so much ATM about this web technologies
PS: Im german, you may answer in german if you like

If you think you will find someone to pay for it, try to sell. Personally, I don't believe so....

See you on support.pn-cms.de
BTW, with ModuleStudio you could have achieved the same within 1/4 of the time or less.

Trying to sell also comes with quite some responsibility. You will need to offer support. You should probably be quite convinced your code is of high quality and easy to adjust to meet customer requests. Then how are you going to sell? ...
I'd recommend not trying to sell your first module. -

You would probably be better off selling support for your product and taking donations. Develop a base of users, then you can sell support, customizations, and addons, later.
Develop a roadmap and make your intentions clear. For example offer versions X and Y for free, but let people know that you may charge for version Z.
Zikula and Gaming is a rather untapped market.. and there are many who would love to see Zikula used for game management in a more streamlined fashion.

I tryed it....
but i didnt get on with it... too "complex computer/programming special language",
no easy to understand instruction "how to",
and the program crashed for me... with again intransparent reason(s) because of the special computer language.
I am not an expert... but my first impression was this program was made FROM a "information scientist" FOR "information scientist"'s
- i am not one
so i switched to try to code it by myself
... mhhh, and i am sure all the loops etc for calculating "games and tournaments" and "exlude and include" this and that "if this and that" would not have so easy be done by a program ;)

This is soooo very true.
I'm not sure of the legalities, but if someone was to fix up pnflashgames, I'm sure many people would cough up some cash to pay for it. -

Ahh i understand you i think...
I could for example get paid for "installation" service and such things.
Make my own module running, if someone would have problems...
... or give service for someone who would like "extra functions" to code it and sell this code.
Good Idea... if so, i will need a website ;) however.. i am a student and need every cent
Hey... i do ATM a job as "heater counter reader" for 9Euro/h - not the best job for a potentially future physics scientist / engineerer

I'm finishing my engineer now
and the scheme that i choose is the LGPLed software, just like Zikula.
I've improved my skills a lot and developed my first module called Relay with Ajax features and nice use of the Zikula API (IMHO). After that i wanted to form a team of people interested in Zikula theming; then we've put a big effort developing a theme development framework (BlankTheme), supported in one of the most popular CSS frameworks and now it's near to be released.
Now i'm pretty busy finishing my thesis, but my plan is to finish BlankTheme, port a lot of cool freetemplates available out there. As a team, we take donations and further, we can offer theming services, theme customizations and development, etc.
Personally, i want to update some third party modules too and i'm sure that people will appreciate that and will support me with some donations. Some featured request may have a bounty/price, and hopefully that scheme will work!

good luck nestormateo!
Sure modify modules made from others is a very hard job because of individual coding
If i would really ever release my module i am happy after that to understand my own code at later review

I don't agree. If you keep to the standards defined (and fortunately almost all module developers these days do) it's a breeze to read and understand any modules code.
There might be more or less comments and slight variations in style, simplicity, and compactness, but everything is readable and understandable. -

For that reason is even more important that you follow a clear standard, will save you time and will improve your skills. In my experience with Relay, it was too damn cool to order the stuff in the userapi only then use it for Ajax operations or anything that i want!
