Scribite editor choice suggestions  Bottom

  • I'm kind of overwhelmed by the editor options and each of their individual plugins/options (I still think bbcode is pretty cool stuff), and I don't figure I'm alone. So I'm hoping this thread can exhibit needs and solutions to help an editor newbie make a choice without having to spend hours if not days trying to figure it out (there it is, I'm inherently lazy and I'd rather learn from others mistakes... all hail opensource).

So tell us (speaking for all overwhelmed noobs), what is your editor and options/plugins of choice for what situation and why?

  • I use Xinha exclusively. It seems to be the most integrated and full featured.

On the Xinha web site there's a demo where you can preview a good portion of the plug-ins: Xinha Demo Link

The plug-ins that I used depend on the web site. On a realtor's web site, I try to keep it VERY simple, but on my city portal, I'm the primary user so I add all the cool stuff. The one plug-in that I think is the bee's knees is "PasteText", which allows you to paste formatted text (HTML, word, etc) and rips out all the formatting leaving clean plain text.
  • I use Xinha and TinyMCE up until now for my sites. Both have a lot of very usable plugins (as noted above already icon_wink ) and integration with zikula. Both have an imagemanager you can use (for tinymce there is also a commercial one from the makers).
And both support Safari (on the mac) now, so for me that's crucial.

Sven's focus has mostly been on Xinha AFAIK and that might also influence plugin availability etc.

FCKeditor is great and has a long history already. Loads of options available.

OpenWYSIWYG and NicEdit aim for lightweight and fast loading and do that in the demo's on their sites. Xinha and tinymce for example are somewhat heavier and dont load instantly.

I think all editors are being developed actively.
