After discussing the idea with smart men from Belgium and Germany, I have decided to ask the community to gather in support of a new concept. The X Prize has been used to get people motivated to accomplish something hard to achieve before. It may be used incorrectly here but in concept, it is what is driving this idea.
I would like to donate a small sum of money to be paid to whomever can build a very simple, extensible blogging solution. I would like others who would also like the use of this module to find an amount of $$ in their own mind and determine to donate that upon the module being built. If enough people want this to be made, it can be.
I propose that we could do this for a number of modules that we want. But for now, I think we are lacking a truly great blogging solution. It would need to include an easy admin interface, a title, category, body, options for integrating Mediashare media, crpVideo, tagging built in, and some form of spam protected commenting; perhaps even a rating hook? Obviously the solution would be GPL and free to the community even those who don't contribute.
These are my ideas for a full and robust system that can also be very simple.
I will contribute $100 to the pot. I'm ready to PayPal the money the instant the module is done.
I hope MANY MORE of you will join with me and we can inspire that developer out there to think about building it. Post what you want and what you can contribute - WHAT YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE. Let me know what you guys think...

While I know the purpose of this thread isn't really for this kind of discussion... However for me this isn't one module... but a whole series of modules that can interact.
The news module handles the basic blog posting; you then add trackback, EZComments, ratings, sharethis, the Gravatar plugin. Protect yourself from spam with the Akismet and Bad Behaviour modules. Integrate your del.icio.us links with the del.icio.us suite, last.fm profile with the last.fm module.
A tagging solution should be avaiable soon - Simon has this one in hand I believe.
The one part I don't know about is integration of video from either Mediashare or crpVideo.
What is needed, for me, is to put together a zikula distro with all of these modules included and pre-configured to tie together.

Tagging I'm hoping to finish in September - I realise this is far from ideal but unfortunately I have a day job until then that sees me out of the house from 6am to 8pm (and with no energy to do anything else in the evenings).
I would suggest the best multi media solution would be MediaAttach but with a more comprehensible interface.

So is no one else interested in funding this?
I have to admit, I'm a little shocked. -

Hmmm... you are rather unclear about exactly you want in terms of specs. What are you looking for that isn't available already? You would have to rather clear about what you want. How much it will cost? Who will build it?
You cannot expect people to toss money into a hat arbitrarily. Possibly, you may need to outline your needs and line up a developer and a budget. Then possibly yo could attempt to do this.

I'm not up on what's needed for a complete blogging solution, but if some sort of guidelines are written up, I'll either meet of beat Steven's $100.

AFAIK, Steven's X Prize method opens it up to anyone. I like it. Some requirements for claiming the prize need to be hashed out though. -

The only things I see from Marks configuration that I think could be added to the mix is an xmlrpc solution for desktop clients and an eMail-to-posting solution. If these are available, a how-to would be great.
Scribite helps connect Mediashare and MediAttach assets on site but from a remote posting client Mediashare, MediaAttach are not(?) available. There is also the idea of a moblog/photo blog where the photo asset needs handling from the mobile device. (this might now include video and audio as well.)
As far as Categories, are these easily leveraged? I am curious if folks shift the default location of user categories to the global portion of the tree, under a heading like Blog? How have you assigned the categories for blogging Mark? What do your trees look like in general?
The limitation of the news module is in publishing options (and that its name limits how folks look at the module.) It would be nice to be able to configure/edit category heading pages as though they were designed and not a raw list with a measure of integration like the content module. Overall I am not disappointed With zikula in the least!

I like Mark's thinking in that it should be a bunch of different pieces assembled into a "blog pack" that self-installs and does all the hard work for you. I'm not sure exactly how you would go about that, but I think it needs to be easy as pie so that any newbie blogger can install it and start posting. Maybe it could be a module itself, with the pieces configurable as sub-modules(?). I don't know, just sort of thinking out loud and hoping for something that would be as end-user-friendly as possible. -

I'd suggest that, along with the above suggestions regarding project definition, funds for this distribution project be held in trust to protect both developers effort and contributors interests.
It might be in Zikula Software Foundations (is that right at this point? or is it still PNSF) interest to hold this trust and encourage/help define the event.
I will contribute (cash and/or plugins/code distro elements) if the above can be done. As an investor I'd be worried that an acceptable distro for some would not necessarily suit my needs and/or abilities, and as a developer I'd be concerned that time spent on something I may never have a use for would be lost to something I felt was inadequate to posted criteria.
My own interests would be using modules utilizing Zikula Object Oriented API structure and (PN)Render:: templating along with most above posted suggestions. Also an admin category that lists blog oriented modules for easy administration of blogging as an aspect of the website.

I will surely donate some cash, but since I'm looking more for the Community distribution, I will keep the amount a little lower, 50$
There is also the discussion on the distribution names as a reference to the different distributions that were talked about.

Criteria:
Each contributor gets a vote per $1 of support they pledge.
Developer prepares solution, offers it for testing
Contributors vote if it meets their criteria - a portion of the vote works, too...ie, $100 with 50% satisfied = $50.
If the vote is over 66% of the pledge, developer gets access to 50% of funds. Once over 80%, 100% of funds.
or something like that to tie risks/rewards together. -

Taking the initiative on this i've created a project to co-ordinate this. Along with an initial module list - that currently doesn't include the media handling aspect as I don't know much about the available modules.
For this to work we really need contributers rather than finances....

I will assist in any way I can and for that, I think writing documentation would be my biggest help. I have added myself to the Cozi project and look forward to coordinating with you guys on making this project happen. -

Mark,
True...contributors trump financing...BUT if someone wants something (the lay web admin who "uses" Zikula rather than coding with it) they can offer financing as a way to spur other contributors.
I would be willing to assist in an effort like this, too.
IMO a distribution should:
1. Have a set core of modules that function well together
2. Use the Zikula custom install to pre-configure much of the basic site setup as possible (including modvars, permissions, default groups custom to the distribution along with permissions to the various auto-configured menu's and modules)
3. No exclude other functionality or modules from being "added" after install.
4. Interoperability of modules (hooks, API, etc.) perhaps done by "helper" mods custom to the distribution...ie, a Media2Blog helper mod that coordinates getting images to server and into blog content hooked into both the News and Mediashare/mediaattach, etc.
What would be great is if there was a "configurator" API for postnuke so that the core, and various modules, could have a configuration - ie, modvars, etc. - exported and imported at will. Then, everyone could have a basic setup, and import someone else's config without having to manually make the changes.
Or, perhaps, they merely "reset" the local distribution and everyone makes efforts to use the custom install possibilities in Zikula.
