Maybe if we can't get together on a single location, we could do satellite meetings...

This seems to be the most practical right now.

It seems like we have some people in the pacific northwest, rocky mountains, cornfield heartlands and in the Northeast. I think the best thing to do for now would be to have 4 or 5 meetings centered around the locations we described:

Portland, OR - Wendell and mhalbrook can organize?
Denver, CO - Vanessa already doing it.
Wherever, IL - dreamingmonkey and I can coordinate on this one. (I have family in Champaign, IL)
New York? - Dave can you do a little something up there?

Everyone could go to wherever they want or all of them. America is big so this may be the best way to at least get started.

    What do you guys think?

~Edit~ Oh yeah, I never drink beer and would absolutely denounce it's copnsumption at any of these events!

Of course it is also the intention to have fun and get to know each other. Beer has never been consumed during these meetings, never ever, who says so hasn't been there icon_rolleyes .

Maybe not during icon_wink , and I haven't been there yet, but I recall someone complaining about a hangover and blaiming Axel.... icon_biggrin

  • As much as I'd love to help organize such an event, I am absolutely buried in work trying to run two businesses. I could possibly help if organizing were to include little more than finding a good bar and setting a time. ;)
  • Well, I'm all for an Illinois meeting. If you want to do Champaign, I'm only half an hour west of there. Or we can do it redneck style. I'm in a sleepy little farm town called Atlanta. Sounds bigger than it is, really. But we have two gas stations, a restaurant, a motel, a half dozen bars, and a really nice 9-hole golf course that only costs $8 a round if you walk. So if anyone plays, bring your clubs. There's nothing I like better than looking foolish in front of complete strangers.

As for Zikula being a European-centered project, don't I know it. I can handle Spanish, French, and Portuguese with little trouble, but German and Dutch? It's a good thing you guys write readable code. If I had to survive on documentation, I'd be a goner.

And Wendell, I was suggesting something more along the lines of wrapping up the evening at a bar after the work is done. But if you think we should skip that and just meet at various bars across the country, I'm all for that, too.

Come to think of it, how did Americans manage to make it to the moon?

Maybe if we can't get together on a single location, we could do satellite meetings, even matching up dates with meetings in Europe.

Best idea I've read so far. The main problem I see with North America (and I could include South America for this argument) is the size of it. It is considerably less of a chore to travel from anywhere within Europe to it's center than it is to get halfway across the US... never mind that I have to cross the American border to accomplish this. vworld's idea of a camp is the likeliest candidate to succeed, if the idea could be incorporated with dreamingmonkey's proposition of video conferencing then smaller cells of camaraderie could be developed.

Does anything actually get done at these meetings or is it an excuse for a bunch of nerds to get together and drink? Either way, I'm all for it.

I'm game for both inclusive... but not simultaneously.

Edit after above post snuck in on me --

  • Sounds like regional meetings may be the best bet for the US. I've got some contacts in the Hospitality industry up here, having gone to school at the "International Air & Hospitality Academy" to learn the business side of Cooking. Assuming he's still there my instructor, last I knew, was the banquet chef for one of the casinos in Oregon.

  • Canadian technology, huh? Well, that's one episode of the "Red Green" show I must have missed. For those who don't know what that means, let's just say that in the U.S., we have dozens of shows like "Modern Marvels" that show the inner-workings of high-tech gadgets, machinery, weapons, etc. The Canadians, on the other hand, had a long-running show called "Red Green" about a suspender-wearing guy who ran a lodge and invented stuff in his back yard. My favorite was an elevator he made from an old phone booth and a broken water heater. Anyway, that's all I know of Canadian technology. So perhaps someone up there needs to start working on a little P.R.

Back to the serious stuff. If we want to make something happen, perhaps we should take volunteers for a little planning committee to start narrowing down a list of dates and deciding on the logistics of the thing. And, we need to figure out what we hope to accomplish with it? I guess the better question is what does the community need accomplished that could best be done by getting us together in groups?

Finally, we should put together a list of people who are actually willing and able to host the meetings. It's easy for me because my office is one bedroom of an otherwise unused 1000 square foot house. I have plenty of room for a dozen people or so to meet together and break off into smaller groups. And if there's more interest than I can accommodate in my office, there's a venue here that I can rent for a weekend for less than $100 that would fit a couple hundred people. But in some places, the host might have to be willing and able to reserve a venue, put down a deposit, etc.

  • If you don't know your lat and long to add yourself to that google map, for now you can use my (very) under-construction site to get those. I had all that information in the database anyway so it took me all of 30 seconds to make this work. Go to http://www.hometownrag.com and type your zip code in the Switch Home Town box near the top of the page. For the moment (until I need it to do something else), that will direct you to a page with your latitude and longitude (or, more accurately, that of your post office). Close enough for government work, though.

But please, no making fun of anything you might see there from time to time. It's a work in progress. Actually it's really sort of in its infancy. So you might get the occasional error or find the whole site displaying upside-down. That's the nature of the beast. It's sitting on my cheap shared hosting account while I develop it. I promise it'll be a whole lot more impressive when it's ready to launch.

  • What I did was used the map at http://community.zikula.org/GoogleMap.htm and max zoomed into my street, placed my property right in the center of the map, and copied the co-ordinates conveniently listed just below the map. Sure enough the result is incredibly accurate.

  • @Topiatic, Do you live in that tree, or is your house too new for the mapping photos?
  • LOL I never actually looked at the satellite image... I'm the one with the oddly angled driveway, so I guess it's off by half a property north (an empty lot). the grass is actually green this year and the little trees in the back yard are the remains of a much larger pear orchard. I'm lucky enough to have my sister renting the acre one house south, and a good friend renting the house just north of the empty lot... good neighbours are hard to get... great neighbours... well I'm blessed.

  • I'd be up for this. As far as location, my thoughts...

    * I'm in Santa Barbara, CA. Everybody wants to come here but it ain't cheap. I do have some very basic facilities to offer. If in the summer, I might be able to arrange facilities (including dorm rooms) at a local college.

    * my organization's main office is in St. Louis. It would be easier for me to get my travel budget by combining a trip to the main office ;)

    * Both Denver and Portland are relatively easy for me to get to.

    * Chicago O'Hare has been a nightmare every time I've had the misfortune to have to fly there. Dallas too, FWIW.

A few of you are aware of some of what we're doing with postnuke/zikula. I've love to present it.
