I have been talking about this for a while with a few people off the boards and thought I would open a new discussion for those of us in the US and the Western Hemisphere in general. The Europeans are having their what 3rd or 4th Zikula meeting in so many years, why can't we have ours?
A few potential sites have been discussed and also time frame would need to be planned out as well but I want to know what you guys think about meeting for a day or two to discuss Zikula, help organize a few workshops, hang out as a community. I realize for some this may not be possible but for others it may so we would like to discuss some possibilities.
Timeframe
Some options below may work:
October 2008
January 2009
June 2009
Location
Where should we meet?
Denver, CO
Dallas, TX
Chicago, IL
St. Louis, MO
All of these places are central to the US and are major hubs. I live in Tulsa so I could go to any of these places. Chicago or Dallas would be my preference. Denver would be beautiful and another option as well.
Please post your thoughts on the idea and timeframe and location choices. If you'd like to help form a plan with me, email and we can a group together to plan it.
Thanks!

Please write a short frontpage article pointing to this discussion.
BTW: This year it is first Camp Zikula but 5th meeting overall
BTW2: NYC would be the cheapest location in case Europeans would want to join.

Yeah, Portland would be a great place to meet!
If by Portland, you mean NYC, that would be fantastic!

IMHO, Singapore would be the best. Best port, 2nd best airport, I'm sure it'll be easy for you guys to come!
Well with an available port, sure! While my yacht is getting new marbled installed in the piano room, and my other yacht, the heliport is a tad too small, it would be some months before I could set sail.
You crack me up, Europe is too expensive to make the trip and you are talking Singapore. If I were to travel to Asia, Zikula programing would be the last thing I would want to do there. :D

Actually, I would love that. My wife and I have our sights set on a trip there one of these days. We've heard nothing but good things about Singapore.
However, concentrating on the States, I think Denver would be an ideal location.

ATM this discussion isn't very constructive: Everybody suggests his hometown. If you want to have the meeting at your hometown make concrete suggestion...

I'd have to say Denver or KC. The other two places I've been, and not fond of them in the summer or winter :). At least in KC we can have some good BBQ.

I imagine that if someone was to step up and actually start organizing something, they could name the location themselves. If the location was actually open to discussion, I vote for Vegas. I believe you can get a cheap flight to Vegas no matter where you are. -

As Darryl said, if you want to find a place, let someone organize the meeting, so he/she can select the city. This way worked in Germany for five years now. Those who are interested will join anyway. For meeting #1 to #4 I have done the main organisation so the meetings took place where I was living. This year it is Axels turn so it will take place where he lives.
If you select a city with a cheap connection to Europe (NYC?) you might have the chance to see someone from here. I haven't been on a real vacation for years now

While, the US is blessed with infinite ideal locations. I tend to agree with Europeans here. NYC (yes relatively close to me, but to be fair the closest international airport is only 20 mins from me in Albany, NY) is ideal for an international gathering. It accommodates foreign travelers well. Has a large population in itself.
Since the bulk of our core is actually from Europe, it would make sense to want to have as many of them attend as possible. NYC is internationally central to Europe and the US/Canada. The google map here may help to pin point a ideal location.
It is important to want to have key attendees show.
Boston and DC are also points to consider.
