As A Licensing Curiosity, I asked the FSF...  Bottom

  • Firstly I forgot I ever sent the FSF a letter which is quoted below!
But I find the response interesting and understandable.
It is a Complex Path, juggling the needs/goals of a project.
I don't think/know if there there has been a goal for .8/ zikula( icon_biggrin ), to be listed with the FSF or have the designation of "Free" software in addition to "Open Source."

I am grateful to the Dev Team for a great reWrite that is making the basic function of the software fulfill it's first purpose as a platform for site management.

While the Open/Free debate can rage elsewhere (let us not have it here) it would be great if some day we were both Open and Free. First things first, On to NewName.

    Hi,
I took a look at Postnuke and saw that part of it is licensed with the Overlib license, which is an unfree license. We can't list projects with unfree parts in the free software directory.

Let me know if this part gets relicensed or is not included in future versions and I will be happy to take another look at Postnuke.
    Thanks,
    Deborah

    Hello,

I was curious if there was anyone there that could explain the current or historical disposition of a package of software not listed in the FSF directory. On your directory you state, "Licenses are verified for each and every program listed in this directory." What Does that mean? If you cannot verify a license a package in question than, they do not get listed or their license is invalid or has problems that need to be fixed?

In particular I was curious about the Postnuke CMS at http://postnuke.com and their disposition in regards to the Directory. Postnuke is not listed in your directory. Has Postnuke not been recommended to the Directory? Postnuke has been around since at least 2001 and has a world wide dispersal in the 10Ks of installed user base.

Can you walk me through the process of how a recommendation in general gets approved for the directory. In that walk through can you use Postnuke as the example?

    Thank You,

    Paul Stewart - takeit2@****.com

  • Overlib will be removed as soon as it's convenient to do so. This is actually an on-going discussion at the moment.

  • As far as I know only overlib and, on the surface at least, it looks free itself. It uses the artistic licence which is considered GPL compatible. However there is some additional text added to the base licence which takes it away from being free software.

This was an oversight on our part - one which will be corrected at a suitable point within the release cycle. i.e. we can't just remove it as there may be modules that depend on it.
