Maybe that is a stupid question but with the new structure of 0.8 ... where to I put additional blocks for modules I've downloaded somewhere else. For example Polls block or Advanced profile for pnphpbb? I tried to put them into the blocks directory inside the module they are getting content from but those just are not becoming active/available in the blocks section in this case. -

Well,
some of that Blocks may need an update to the new 0.8 technologies, nothing hard.
But if you want to try, put them in the /config/blocks directory.
The config directory is where we'll put some customized stuff (also in the /themes folder) and there will be safe when we upgrade the system. I think that the .7x Polls block is currently deprecated and you may use the 0.8 version.
I hope that Mark West include a copy of the .8 Polls module in the RC3!
Good luck!

That did help, thanks. For those wondering too: the blocks copied to config/blocks directory show up under legacy/xyz in the blocks selection.
On a side note: I'm trying to use as few modules as possible BTW so the forum poll option is all I need anyway. :)
