I want to display only certain information from the core news module within HTML blocks on my home page, such as the title and lead-in from a randomly selected second-page news item that falls within a date range, or a list of up to 5 of the most recent news titles about a particular topic and links to the article itself.

How do I access the list of news items, and from each item pull such information as id, title, lead-in, body, author, start date, end date, topic and first/second page?
