Duh, I am stooooopid. Apparently my personal settings in the site somehow got set to ten stories. LOL
So if you have this problem, check your personal settings! :)

Yep, personal setting override the index_stories...
i've changed that in the core-code because to me, the home stories num is a webmaster choice and it can screw it up the home layout.
So, depends of the site...

Its something I'd just as soon disable so I can make this site look like is looks without that kind of personalization, since it will throw out the rest of the design if it is changed.
