Why do people pay for CMSs?  Bottom

  • When it seems like the best ones and support are all open-source ?

I see all these proprietary CMSs for like $599.00, then every extra module is $299.99 and I just wonder why ?

Is it just because they don't know about open-source ?
  • It is all about accountability and support.

When you buy a commercial CMS like those you are paying for someone to call on when things go wrong.

Just like Operating Systems in a business environment, you purchase the OS for the support that comes with it. Which is why Red Hat, SuSe, MS, SUN all are in business when Linux is free :)

open source has nothing to do with the price - there are companies selling OS-products (even postnuke and its forks like e.g. pantheon) and this is completly ok and within the GPL.
most often it's IMHO about support and responsibility that makes companies pay for solutions.

** As well as, royalties to patents and software that may violate the GLP... Example: Fedora does not come with MPEG2, MP3, ATI & Nvidia Drivers, DVD (CSS) playback, ect**
