PN and 'weblogging'  Bottom

  • In .7.6.3 and 0.8MS2 a fresh install starts with:

PostNuke is a weblog/content management system (CMS). It is far more secure and stable than competing products, and is able to work in high-volume environments with ease.

PN, compared to blogging software, sucks for being a 'weblog system'

I'm using PN as a highly extendable weblog system, but when comparing it to wordpress/geeklog/movable type/typepad PN is years behind.

How are the intentions for .8 on these issues:
Tagging, automatic-pinging, XML-RPC's, autmatic trackbacking, more feeds (using more items (category, date modified))
I edited some core files, changed a few templates, and send a big out to sites that search blogs. Using tags and pings I added my blogs with 1 click to 15 sites that searches on blog engines.

Since PN comes with the text as being a stable more secure product then competing products, atleast it should keep up. Or, but I hope not, take out the message it's for weblogging, because other products are just way better.
  • did you already check out http://noc.postnuke.com/projects/pnwebservices/ ?

  • Yeah I did.

And I'm not using these add-ons. What those blogging software do is using tags, then when you add a blog entry, that software sends pings to services like icerocket, technorati, and other blogservice site to have them notified that there has been a placed a new blog.

Since PN doesn't do that, and blogsoftware does, PN can't compete with that on the blogging part.

I've made some changes to some core fils which add tags to the href's and that works like a charms. But when i submit a new blog, i need to ping those blogservice sites manually, and the blogsoftware does that automaticly.

If these things are build into postnuke, then postnuke would also be blogsoftware.

Since not everone is using postnuke for blogging, this might be good to have these things be turned on/off in the admin.

If i write a blog, and i know someone else did the write a blog over the same issue, it'd be also cool if there whas an option to send an automated trackback to those sites.

The webservices link you posted doesn't add this functionallity.

I'm using postnuke for blogging, because it's easy to theme/style, the extention/modules that can be added and that are available is superb. I really like it, don't get me wrong. But when it says what i quoted in my first post in this topic. It could be better by looking what's happening in blog-world.

In the thread about technorati tags and postnuke I added a little workaround which adds these tag'ing features, and if these things would become a standard thing, then postnuke would be good for blogging. Many bloggers use wordpress because of those things.

The tags I've got working new, just don't know how that automatic ping works so that services like technorit, icerocket, blogrolling etc will be notified that the site's been updated. This is a thing that should be triggered when you submit an item to the frontpage/newsindex.

    Then it'd be perfect
  • The pnwebservices project SVN repository contains a ping module which i've not yet released. This will take care of the pinging blog directories.

The trackback module takes care of the trackback specification fully. You *might* mean pingback which is different but serves similar purposes. In the case of pingback the blog post is scanned for urls and each URL is checked to see if it's pingback enabled. If it is then a pingback is sent. I'm currently working on implementing pingback.

  • Ahh.. cool beans..

I modified a couple of core files to use tags, on the index, all articles have the rel="bookmark", and the topics have rel="category tag" at this moment.

I was looking myself to see if i could be able to add an admin button to send pings to blog directories, but my knowledge isn't letting me make it icon_razz pingomatic has an XML-RPC too, and pings a lot of these directories. If that service could be set as default, it'd be great.

Not sure what you mean by the pingback, but lets say I've read a few blogs somewhere, and I want to add an entry on my own site, about the same topic. If that entry on the other site has a trackback function, it'd be cool to have an option in the add-story (or a different module that handles new blog entries) to have those articles automaticly pinged. Meaning I don't have to go add those manually on the other site(s). Hope this explains it, my english ain't that good.

I was also looking for a nice archiver, searched the NOC, but pnArchive is access denied. The description of it sounds just like the thing i need icon_wink

  • From your description what you're describing is pingbacks not trackbacks. With trackback you can enter a single URL of a post your're blogging about. That post will then have a trackback sent.

With pingback the contents of your post is scanned for URLs. Each URL is then checked to see it it's pingback enabled. If it is then a pingback (at this point essentially the same as a trackback) is sent.

If that's not what you mean can you provide me with an example.

  • pingback it is then... icon_razz
  • The trackback module on the NOC seems to be corrupted. Is there another place to find it?
