Name change  Bottom

  • Sorry, just had to bring it up again after reading a post from an unknowledgable sort that lumped postnuke in with phpuke ..labeling them together as bloated and insecure.

.8 presents a great opportunity to break out of the stigma and start all over. fresh and new. everyone has beat this up over and over again and I know some of you are "game".. I just ask that maybe you can take some time and seriously consider the opportunity that .8 offers in breaking away from the old and tired stigma.

    thanks,
    devin
  • Oh well, what's in a name huh..

Most people that visit my site think it's PHP-Nuke, just because it's widely known, and the 3 colomn based layout. Same goes for xoops/joomla/asp-nuke/whatever.

Would be same as changing the 'adam baum' name to something different, as Xaraya uses that core as stable for like 2 years now (we known here that the people developing that framework were former PN devvers). But when .8 is going to hit stable, I think it's not going to be a positive issue when it'll be reviewed.

Ah well, I'm gonna stick to PostNuke, regardless what the codename of the core is, or the name of the package.

true .. and they have never been lumped with phpnuke.. if any back-reference is ever made, it's a fork of postnuke..

..of course I'll continue to use it, the name doesn't mean anything to me.. but the stigma exists and the project deserves to stand on its own merits.
  • When I first started using a CMS I had tried Xaraya but I settled on Postnuke. icon_lol
Anyway I do know what you mean about the confusion with the ever hacked PHP-nuke. In fact I thought they were by the same people!

Just curious, if you could "rename" Postnuke, what would you call it? icon_smile

I doubt that the new name would be made public before all necessary steps are taken to protect it.
Right now in germany one guy holds the trademark for postnuke and the corresponding domain postnuke.de and won't sell them to the german PostNuke Foundation (PostNuke e.V.). That's why I think that for a new name the foundation(s) would first acquire all possible domains and reserve the trademark where necessary before releasing the name to the public.
  • What do you suggest? that PN Found have to register all world-wide domain names (as .uk, .fr, .es, .ru, .ch,...)? for me that it is improbable,
I thing that this a problem that all companies have to deal with, probably there are some legal ways to solve this, (at least for don't relate its),
I thought that PN Found was a non profit organization !!
    ...
  • I think the main domains that will be registered will be .com, .org, .net, .eu, .de, .fr and maybe .co.uk and .es. It is not only what I suggest but what I think will most likely happen. The german foundation has membership fees (BTW, I'm a paying foundation member myself) and some adsense income that can be used for domain costs. That won't be the problem and yes, PN and the foundations are completely non profit.

If you have name suggestions, contact the core dev team (as I did although I didn't get any feedback yet).

I guess so :) ..the thing is, every time I come across a discussion about CMS's either a) postnuke is not mentioned at all or b) it i lumped directly with phpnuke. I guess something to think about is, suppose you had a client, suppose you tell him/her that you're going to build their site on this kick ass system called postnuke, suppose this person does a little research.. I suppose this person would loose confidence given the overwhelming "evidence" that postnuke is not a good system. from the perspective of someone who doesn't know any better, it's not popular because it is insecure and bloated (by proxy). So, why is it not popular? It's obviously an incredible system, secure, efficient, extendable, robust..adjective, adjective..etc. I don't think the answer is just to sit it out and wait (another year) for people to change their minds.

I worked for a guy once, a pretty shady character, got busted for "impurities" in his liquor.. they shut him down, fined him, the whole bit.. the restaurants reputation was toasted, exit public trust..so what does he do? ..takes the sign down, puts out new menus, re-arranges the furniture.. et viola! people assumed it was under new ownership and flocked in to try the new restaurant in town. It was one of the most amazing "tricks" I've ever witnessed.

    anyway..
