Hook Creation Howto?

I really feel the fckeditor is truely fabulous and would be a greak hook edition. I have it working fine manually, like I said, i would love to create this as a hook to make it easier for other modules to use and also for the purpose of distribution. Is there any documentation on this? -

Somehow I remember seeing this as a project at the NOC... not sure, but I think it was one of Mark West's projects. -

I've got a NOC project for fckeditor but have never managed to keep up with work on it. If someone wants to take this one on i'm quite happy to hand it over.
Hook modules are something different to the way you'd build a visual editor module though.

After all the years that I have been working with Postnuke I have never mangaged to comphrehend Hooks, in fact I can't understand how they would be different from a modapi call, ie calling a function from another mods API - an API that is set up for such things... hmmmmmm

My question is why in the world is it installed as a module and put in the modules folder, when it reality its a hook. Then their are plugins as well. LOL, confusing i tell you.
