Hello everyone,
Well I am brand new at this and I am trying to figure out why where to upload the PostNuke 0.762 files. Do I upload them to the "www" folder or the "someother" folder within my FTP client?
Also, when I try to follow the installation instructions and type in "www.mysite.com/install.php" which is what the installation guide states to do, I keep getting a 404 error message.
Someone please help, I am really overwhelmed at this point.
Thanks as always

You can upload them where ever you choose - but then you have to point your browser to where install.php is. In your case it was not at root (www.mysite.com/install.php) but in a a subdirectory (www.mysite.com/someotherdirectory/install.php).
Use your ftp client to look at your site structure and point your browser with the correct path and you will see the install screen.
And be careful not to post unprotected links to install.php.

i'm having the same problem with installing using www.yourdomain.com/install.php
i have always used HTML, and this is my first time using PHP files...is there something special i need to do to get the installation to work? -
Hard to know exactly what you have done, but here is an outline...
1. Upload the files from the HTML directly (without the HTML directory) to your site, in whichever directory your host specifies (often www). Some people do this straight to root, others to a sub-directory there. (And if you can upload either a zip or tar and unpack it there, it is faster and you are less likely to have missed or munged files during the ftp process.)
2. Read and follow the instructions in the docs folder for changing permissions.
3. Point your browser at install.php. If you uploaded to root, it is to www.yourdomain.com/install.php. But if you uploaded to a sub-directory named PN (say, to separate your PostNuke stuff from some other stuff), then point to www.yourdomain.com/pn/install.php.
If this doesn't answer the question(s), pleasse be much more specific in describing your problem. "I am having the same problem with installing..." is a bit like "My car doesn't run..." and makes it hard to pinpoint the problem.
e.g., I uploaded the files to directory xxx which is at root in www.nameofdomain.com and then I pointed my browser to ..... and this is what I saw....etc.
Welcome. PostNuke is much more fun than HTML.

i uploaded the files into the root directory...pointed IE to www.yourdomain.com/install.php and got HTTP Error 404...all files are in root, i do not have any subdirectories...i tried the installation readme that came with it, and that did not solve the problem either...thanks for your help on this
-
Well, 404 means you successfully reached the server but theserver couldn't find the file you asked for using the path you gave.
Commonest causes I have seen:
1. Typo (can't tell you how often I've done that)
2. A new site, and files were successfully uploaded with the xxx.xxx.xx.xx address given by the host but the DNS hasn't yet disseminated the info linking this to www.somedomain.com -> in which case, pointing your browser at xxx.xxx.xx.xx/install.php works
3. Permissions - with install.php not being readable

1. i double checked all spelling and lines
2. not sure what exactly you mean...
3. where would i check permission on the install.php file?
i wouldnt mind giving you the info for the site, if you wouldnt mind taking a look at it? -
1. Check
2. Purchasing hosted space and a domain name are not the same. So, for example, when I purchased hosting space from an ISP, they gave me an IP address of XXX.XXX.XX.XX. I then had to tell their domain name servers (DNS) that the name I had registered was at that number. It then took a couple days for that information to propagate to other domain name servers. During that few days, I could get to my site by number but not by name.
3. Assuming you do not have shell access on your host, you point your ftp program at a file and use it to check permissions - exactly how you do that depends on your ftp program.
And, yes, if you PM me the address, username and pw you use to ftp files to the site and the domain name, I will look and see if I can sort out what the problem is.

Perhaps someone else can offer more than I can.
Her provided me with the log on information. The PN files were there and appeared intact, but everything had permissions of 200 and no listed ownership. I was (obviously) unable to change permissions. And I uploaded a test file which also had permissions of 200 and which I could not change - but which I could delete.
I told him the next step seemed to be contacting his host.
Any other thoughts?
