The Permissions system  Bottom

  • Hello,

I've had a bit of a chance to look around the 0.8 MS1 now and I'm pretty impressed so far. Just about everything works but there is one thing that I felt a bit let down about. The Permissions system is still the same as the old one... :( I don't know about many other people but I can say from my side that the permissions system is the most un-intuitive permissions systems I've ever used. I realize that there are so many complexities with the system that it's really hard to design a system that works well for all the possible needs of PostNuke. But there's got to be a better way.

Last week I downloaded the latest CVS version of phpBB3 from http://area51.phpbb.com/ and while every part of it is great, I have to say that the part which stood out to me as being the best upgrade from phpBB2 was the permissions system and I immediately thought that maybe PostNuke could do something like it. If you haven't taken a look at it I highly suggest a look.

Well keep up the great work on .8!

  • I asked the same question a while ago. I believe the answer I received was something like "yes, the permissions will be updated".

If I can work out what the hell they've done with the forums, I'll do a search and see if I can find the thread.
  • We've updated the Permissions system with an Ajax system to be more user friendly, but it would be very difficult to change the permissions system radically when there are these limitations:

    1. Any new versions must be backwards compatible
    2. We rely on module authors to implement permissions properly
    3. We can't guess all the permissions settings available in a module
    4. The current flexibility of the module must be maintained.

That said, suggestions for improvements would be appreciated. The feature requests tracker would be a good place...
