Does the adoption of pnForum signal the death of pnphpbb?  Bottom

  • I chose pnphpbb2 about one month ago for my PN site because it was used here, and now that has changed so I was wondering...

    ...now that you have officially chosen pnForum as your new bbs, does this indicate that support for pnphpbb is waning and that it will not be developed further? I guess that I should ask this question at the pnphpbb website, but I was curious about that the folks over here think.

    Maybe a better question would be what are the advantages of pnforum over pnphpbb2...

  • We chose pnForum over PNphpBB mainly because it provides a solution which is more integrated with PostNuke and more in line with the PostNuke standards. This is especially important when it comes to using this as a support forum, as we can now autolink common support queries to relevant Wiki articles, improving the flow of support.

    Also, this pnForum template is tableless, thereby ensuring that we maintain our aim for high standards of accessibility and generated HTML throughout the site.

    Our change doesn't mean that PNphpBB is a bad forum, or that one is better than the other, it's just that pnForum is more suited to our circumstances. Depending on what you require, you may think differently. The question about the death of PNphpBB is not something I can answer, it must be asked at PNphpBB's site. As far as I know, Carls has not indicated a desire to stop working on PNphpBB

  • I'll step in here and add that PNphpBB is far from dead. There was about a year there where not much has happened. Carls and Batpuppy were too busy with life to be able to devote the time necessary to continue much with the development of PNphpBB... and there was a bit of discouragement going on too based upon some crap random people were giving. Anyways that said, Carls has listened to the cries on these forums and on the PNphpBB forums about continuing this project. Recently he sent out a request for people who were interested in helping with the continuing development of PNphpBB and he recieved quite a few responses. Myself being one of them.

    Right now we have fairly basic plan ahead of us. Our first task is just about complete and that's the integration of PNphpBB development with the Postnuke NOC. Our second task is the complete patching of PNphpBB1.2g with all the security patches and other changes to phpBB up to 2.0.20. Our next task after that is a little hazy still. We have discussed the idea of dropping the PNphpBB1.2h development and moving our Development to a module based upon phpBB3. We have been testing the Development of phpBB3 and while there are a few bogs left for their team to squish, well I've never seen a better forums product. But our move to that depends upon how fast the phpBB team progresses. We may move to 1.2h and finish this version of our project. We are also paying a lot of attention to the development of PN 0.8 and making sure that PNphpBB will integrate well.

    So those are just a few of the things we are looking at in the future of PNphpBB. Please keep watching for release of patches and upgrades for the current 1.2g

  • I do hope not! I love pnphpbb ... since this forum switched over to pnForum, all the info I used just to pick up in a quick search (by post or topic) has become a trawl through hundred of bland, orphaned, unlineated posts.

    Myself, for a forum-driven community that I have, pnphpbb has loads of natty little features that my forum users like. pnForum, seems... well... just so bland!

    My hubby installs all my modules for me, so I view this purely as an end user of the product. I'll not be switching any time soon.

  • I use both pnForum and PNphpBB and would say they are both good products. Happily, they are both being developed and improved. They have different strengths and weaknesses, but choice and (friendly) competition are good things, IMO.

    I believe pnForum version 2.7 (here) is going to have its bugs and kinks worked out over the next few weeks and will prove to be a big improvement over previous versions. Don't be too speedy to give up on the searching here. My understanding is that there is still a fair amount of work ongoing moving material from one site structure to another, moving to a new server, and adjusting/modifying for usability. The last couple days have alaready shown major changes. (I hope the devs and admins and mods are not mistaking ALL the feedback for hostility!)

    And now that a group has started work on PNphpBB again, I look forward to these two good modules getting better.

  • I happily use and suggest both of them.

    Well, I can't officially speak for pnForum - but do have a private opinion. It's my favorite forum module where a slick table-free design and perfect integration is more important than features and cross-compatibility with phpBB. I see a lot of hard work is going into it with great results until today.

    However, I have decided recently to join the fresh PNphpBB developer team and contribute some of my time and work to PNphpBB instead of pnForum, because

    a) My bigger sites do really need it in order to keep the learning curve for new members as flat as possible;
    b) The project was definitely in need of additional manpower;
    c) I love to have the huge developer community from phpBB as a base we can use.

    I hope we can stop the bashing and "mine is bigger" stupidity, because that's unconstructive. Both teams work for a better PostNuke, both do it on a free and open source base - let's not forget that.

    Greetings,
    Chris
