I am really struggling to do the simplest task. I want to link an item in my main menu block to a static HTML page that I want displayed in the centre block.
When I just refer the menu item to an HTML page the page is displayed, but it takes up the whole site.
Forgive me in advance for this idiotic question... I have searched but found nothing relevant.

Hmmm. You will have lots of competition from me and others for the stupidest question.
Did you create a new block as an HTML block and configured as a center block, then pasted your HTML code into that block, then put a link to that in the menu?
Or did you upload an HTML page to your server and then you put a link to that page in your menu?

I think what you want is to use either the Sections mod or (my recommendation) htmlpages from www.markwest.me.uk
