Missing posts with pnForum2.7  Bottom

  • This morning I noticed some bizarre behavior.

When I start scanning the Forum at Start::PostNuke 0.7x Phoenix Core CMS Support under the General Topic 'Installation, Configuration, & Upgrades' it lists the newest post as

    Quote

last posting by sakshale written on May 04, 2006 - 03:04 AM: array_key_exists error'

And if I click on the array_key_exists link, I go to the post.

But if I click on 'Installation, Configuation and Upgrades', that post is nowhere to be seen!

    1. Why would the latest post in a Forum only be available from outside that forum?
    2. How do I know there aren't other posts I am not seeing?

  • And when I just went to page 2 in 'Installation, Configuration, & Upgrades' and then back to page 1, there was the missing post at the top of page 1.

This wasn't browser issue on my end - I duplicated it on 3 different browsers.

I do notice that it appeared ~ 4 hours after the official time it shows for the posting - and that is the same four hours between when I really post and when pnforum thinks I post - is that what happened? It waited 4 hours because of the time tag?

  • Yup... found the glitch.

To fix some query performance, some changes were made in the SQL and an order by post_time was removed. The post was there but down in the list of posts.

I removed one useless index and put back the order... not it's up there.

  • Thanks.

I can only begin to imagine how much effort it is taking by the core folks to get this new site and new Forum up and glitchless - I appreciate it, and on balance I think it represents major progress.

I would REALLY like a couple tweaks to the Forum:

    1. I find it much more useful to have a system that tracks whether or not posts were read, rather than what posts are new since the last visit. New since the last visit implies that every time I come, I will read all the new posts - not a real world work flow. I come and go in bits and snatches during the day and it is very hard to keep track of what I have looked at and what I have not looked at.

    2. I would like the navigation links within the forum on the BOTTOM of the page. After all, when I get through reading through a series of posts and am done with a thread, I am at the bottom, not at the top. So, to navigate to another thread or topic, I have to scroll back to the top first. And if I use the back to top green triangle, it gets me to the top POST but the navigation links require some scrolling to see - extra clicks.

    3. I would like the ability at the bottom of the forum to jump directly to another forum, rather than having to navigate back up the tree and then back down - again, more clicks.

I have had trouble with Search but that seems to be getting better and may simply require that I get familiar with new patterns.

Just my thoughts. I spend a good bit of time here these days and even though my comments above may seem small, multiplied by many repeats, they add up...

But, again, don't mistake my comments for dissatisfaction. I'm on board with the new site - just striving for perfection.....

  • As you saw on the news, the next priority will be to move the setup to the new server ASAP... should be done today or in the coming few days at worst.

    But keep them coming... icon_wink
