pnForum Feedback (collected)  Bottom

  • I'm not invested in any one design or PNphpBB vs pnForum, but I am invested in having the support section here at PostNuke easy to use, so I will try to summarize the issues/concerns that I see as still needing to be addressed. I suspect that work is ongoing on many (if not all) of these.

    • Performance: still spotty but better than before. I understand that there are server issues and load issues, but I continue to get 200 second page renders and intermittent browser-time-out responses.

    • Mac issues. It appears to me that little testing was done to validate the design for Mac users. (Yes, I know were are a minority and weird.) Both Netscape and FireFox on the Mac render some of the print atrociously - actually difficult to read, not just lacking style. Safari seems to have a problem related to displaying posts since last date of visit. OmniWeb gives a JSON parsing error preventing any posting. At the moment, I dread using the forum with my Mac.

    • The 'search first, then post!' message and some of the other (?Ajax)functionalities like the 'storing post' notation seem quirky in that they behave differently on different OS and browsers. For example, the 'search first, then post!' only showing up AFTER I click the submit button!

    • There appears to be no function to show unread posts, as opposed to posts that are new since the last visit. This means that if I come and log-in, I had better plan to read every post that is new before I leave?

    • Some Forums remain MIA: Tutorials, Recycle bin. When I attempted to find something in the Tutorial Forum, by clicking on a link to a post there from a different forum, I got a "You do not have permission to read the content of this category or forum." Core Modules was missing for a bit and has resurfaced, so I suspect these will re-appear as well.

    • The navigation from one formum to another requires Backing Up and then going forward again - no 'jump to another forum drop down' and has to be done at the top of the page - it would be nice to be able to do that at the bottom of the page. One is more likely to be at the bottom of the page than the top when finishing with a topic....

    • It would be nice to have some recognition that one is logged in beyond the bsence of a login icon. Say, 'Welcome, pheski, date_time' above the forum?

    • It would be nice to have stats and names about who is logged-in.

    • I haven't yet been able to go from search to a post and then back to the search results without using a second browser window.

As I said, I'm not here with an axe to grind and I don't want to sound angry or start a whine-fest. Just trying to provide feedback to facilitate tuning this up so it is easy to use.

  • Sorry about the duplication in my post, but after spending 2+ minutes 'storing reply' it gave me a JSON error, so I assumed it hadn't gone through and I cut and pasted it and tried again. Perhaps a mod will discard one?

The Recycle Bin has gone, replaced with a private forum. No point giving the spammers any more publicity than necessary. Tutorials and solutions is currently in the admin category, but I will change this now...

  • Update regarding the Mac compatibility issues:

    1. I let OmniWeb know about my trouble posting related to JSON parsing error and they have opened a ticket on it and will keep me posted - I will provide any info here.

    2. The unreadably small print in Netscape/FireFox can be managed with Command+ to increase font size, though it is not a perfect solution as it markedly increases scrolling requirements.

    3. Safari now does seem to show the 'new since last visit versus only old post icons' on the overall view (Start::) BUT ONLY when I first log on. As soon as I drill down (e.g. to Pheonix Core::Support) and then go back, all the icons all look as if the posts are old. And the front page at http://www.postnuke.com/index.html does not render corrrectly in Safari - the pretty picture and all the stuff are dropped to the bottom.

Still appears to me as if the devs did not look much at Mac functionality. I am hoping for some assurances that this is something folks have noted and are addressing?
