New (pn)Forum glitches?  Bottom

Go to page 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 [+1]:

  • The problems of last night (unable to log in, unable to create new account) seem to be resolved. At least I am able to log in. And I seem to be able to add a comment to an existing thread. But I have been unable to start a new thread. (If this gets posted, that has been fixed. - Seems to be resolved...) I don't see a 'mark all as read option' anymore. And page rendering times seem slow again. Anyone else having issues?

(No attack or criticism intended - just feedback and discussion of the transition.)

  • As you've noticed, we've had some problems. Functionality problems/errors are simply a result of attempted performance optimisations. The site has also got quicker since this morning (hopefully you have noticed this). We are now focusing heavily on the forum as the rest of the site is fine...

  • Another glitch is on the front forums page, when you expand a main forum to show the sub-forums, all the text in the sub-forum listing disappears when the mouse is on the screen. If you move the text area off the screen and back on (move the page up and down), the text comes back; but disappears again if you take the mouse off the scroll bar.

  • We have found and fixed the performance issue here. See the announcement in the announcements forum.

  • Having some intermittent trouble with the Submit and Preview buttons, but not sure of the pattern yet - wondering if it is browser specific. I would be posting this test in the Recycled bin, but it appears to have vanished?

Edit: it appears to be browser specific, in that it is limited to OmniWeb and appears to be related to javascript. I will pass on the problem to OmniWeb support.

I have been able to Submit with Safari and FireFox and Netscape I believe.

  • It does appear to be a consistent pattern with OmniWeb and it appears also to be related to the use of Ajax. (OmniWeb misbehaved with the Ajax on Nate's site, as well.) More information to follow, if and when I know more.

  • I just did a few changes in the storereply function that should help a little when saving the reply. Nothing big but still... should help.

EDIT... Yup... helped a lot apparently.
  • OmniWeb still doesn't work. But Safari does.

Edit: And I can edit with Safari.

  • And I can post with Netscape.

Edit: and I can edit with Netscape - but, interestingly, the "Search first, then post' reminder does not show up with Netscape until *after* I hit the submit button - when it is toooooo late!

    Heh icon_lol
  • And here I am posting from Safari (2.0.3) and the 'Search first, then post' reminder is not here as I type this.

Edit: And it did not show up when I hit submit (the way it did in Netscape) - or at any other time. And here in Safari, I have two quote icons and two edit icons at the bottom of my box (but only one notify mod icon) (Edit-> someone backstage must have just fixed that. thanks, guys.)

And I get two copies of this warning in big black bold letters:

Your browser does not support javascript or you turned it off. This means that several features on this page will not work as intended

Beginning to look to me as if the new set-up is not terribly Mac friendly, which will be a major PITA for me.

  • OK, here (using FireFox on a Mac), the 'search first, then post!' reminder is present in my text box and disappears as soon as I start typing. Firefox seems to let me post and edit - but the text in the index is ugly and so small I have to lean forward and peer at the screen (though I am sneaking up on 60).

  • So, at this point, the standings are:

    1) Safari works adequately but lies about the javascript warnings. My last resort browser.
    2) Netscape works fine but like Firefox, some of it is not readable. My third choice browser usually.
    3) Firefox works best but is way too hard on the eyes. Too bad because it is soo extensible and is my ssecond choice of browsers.
    4) OmniWeb, my preferred browser (best tabbed browser around, does great snapshots of workspaces to return to and is where all my bookmarks live) is un-usuable with PN forum. Sucks. I can only hope that the OW folks have something to offer.

Because, for now, this is turning my browser use on its head.

    1) Safari works adequately

    I lied.

I just realized that Safari doesn't show me the difference between old posts and posts that are new since my last visit. So I have no way to know which posts I have read. Safari is not just not adequate, it is not usable.

So the choice is between readable but broken Safari and eye-killing Netscape/Firefox.

I suspect you will be hearing this from other folks in the Mac world. How much testing of the pnForum in this incarnation happened on Macs?

  • And in Safari, one cannot tell which posts are new and which are not - they all appear read.

In Netscape/Firefox, I see posts that are labelled as unread/new since last visit. But after I read them, they remain marked as new since lst visit.

Editing (more than once) just to test and fix the time offset - which appears to allow 30 min increments as it is now 9:02 PM.
