Installing PostNuke on Windows?  Bottom

  • PluginSoft (BETA) installs and configures Apache HTTP and MySQL Database Services on Microsoft Windows 32 bit operating systems in a matter of seconds. It comes with PHP, a powerful server-side scripting language, as well as three PHP applications: 1)phpMyAdmin, a web-based MySQL Administration tool; 2)PostNuke, a powerful content management system; and 3)phpESP, a web survey publication and analysis solution.

This is BETA software, do not use on production systems. Tested on Windows XP home and Windows 2000 Professional.

I am curious to find out how PluginSoft (BETA) runs on other Win32 operating systems. Please post your experiences with PluginSoft (BETA) to the PluginSoft (BETA) Feedback Form
  • If you're interested, I put a PostNuked WAMP (Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP) installer up for download on PostNuke.TV, based on the Reactor Server from reactorserver.com.... I'll be updating it in a few days time to the very latest 076x from CVS.
  • I usually use xampp to install lamp on my windows machine, although I have been on the lookout to try some other options... what I would really like is to see something like the macromedia flash player, ie a fully standalone plugin that would allow you to run lamp applications - someting that would allow you to run them on cds / dvds, etc... I haven't really comeacross this though...

  • Thanks for the heads up David.

Lobos, I like your idea of running it from a CD or DVD. Although, I am not sure how that would be done unless the system had a rewritable drive and the CD was a CDRW. This would avoid writing the database and web files to the hard disk, as you could write everything to the CD. I wonder how that would perform?
  • IT's possible to do, I've seen soemthing that allows for it, it uses a Ram Disk for the database I think

  • I am thinking a USB thumb drive is the way to go the more I think about it.
  • Portable PostNuke... I love it.

Never thought about it, but a sever on a thumbdrive.... Brilliant.
(Cant apache, PHP, and mysql really be portable?) Off to use google and find out for myself, ahem, I mean wait here for someone to tell me how to do it step by step... j/k

  • It can be done, and done from a CD. It's been awhile, but I remember seeing something about running an actual LAMP from a bootable CD, IE you put the CD in the drive, reboot the computer and a Linux Box comes up with everything you need to run and test a site if I recall correctly.

And I'm pretty sure that easyphp has a versions of their server set up to run on a thumb drive

  • You should be able to customize Knoppix to do this rather "easily". :)
  • I was looking at http://www.uniformserver.com . Anyone have any experience with that?

I always end up putting XP on my lin boxes and giving them to my friends and family looking for a cheap (read free) rig.

  • I updated PluginSoft! The new package is called Gamma. I re-worked the flow of the installer, added the 0.762 patch to PostNuke, and added the ability to install it on any volume. However, the my.cnf file is still written to C: or depending on your system the my.ini file to C:\windows or C:\winnt.

I am getting closer to having PluginSoft run from a USB thumb drive. All I need to do is write a start and stop script for the services, so apache and mysql can be quickly stopped when the thumb drive is pulled from a machine. An update file will also be needed to write the my.cnf or my.ini to the c: system drive when you insert your thumb drive into a new machine.

Looking forward, I also need to encrypt the PHP config files as they are currently in plain text. This is a major security issue and one that will be addressed in the next release.

I am still looking for feedback from other Win32 system users. I have only been able to test it on Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Home.
  • I just installed PluginSoft (Gamma) on a Windows 2003 Standard Edition box and the install went seamlessly!!!
  • PluginSoft USB is now available for download on PluginSoft.com. Run your PostNuke site from a USB thumb drive! Includes a fresh copy of PostNuke pre-installed.
