I am concerned about myspace.com and other initiatives and how that could affect the Web Portals. Opinions, comments how can we develop our sites to keep users coming back...

  • well myspace.com and others are all mainly webblogs and mostly kids use them.

Depends on the sites you build. I know some bands use myspace as it is easy and because alot of people have it.. However, they can't do what we here at Postnuke can do.

Offer originality. Yes they can change their page and do some pretty neat HTML and DHtml stuff. However, THey all look the same.. every layout is the same They can't change that.

However, with Postnuke and CMS's alike with a little hard work and questions asked and answered you could create anything you wanted. from a 3 column site to a no column site to a 100 column site. it is only your imagination holding you back.

please bear with me.. I been working with joomla to see how easy it is to use..
Ok, their admin interface is click happy and clean. However, thats all they got running for them ATM.. everything else so far stinks..

HOwever, with that said.. I think make things easier to use.
I remember seeing a form creator that uses a Gui interface to create the form. If something like that can be created to make a template (mind you basic) then I think postnuke would thrive higher then the rest. The community here is active and will help with manners. Most posts don't get left unread or unansswered (bad joomla should answer posts) Make the admin interface easy, and not clicky like joomla but easy to install modules (I know its easy now, but maybe make a upload option to upload the files into the directory). If we make it easy to do the basic people will want to learn to do the advanced or semi advanced stuff.

Looks like it's no more than high profile competition, I don't see anything there that isn't available in PN (surface apearances).

Mightbe a good idea to grab a membership and list actual available features and just ensure you have something unique that you competition doesn't offer.

  • I have a 90% complete module sitting on my hard drive which is basically a user blog / profile / gallery all in one. It's a custom module that was written for a specific need, but could be adapted to more generic uses, such as a myspace environment.

Dang. I was drooling over the idea of someone taking FormExpress and templating it... but this one has me floored. How many briefcases full of cash do we need to send you?
  • Well, that provoked a reaction I wasn't expecting.

The module was for a client who has since disappeared, and the long term plan was to release it to the community. I developed it in partnership with John Alarcon, who some of you may know :) However, at this time, there's a fair bit still left to do, and a lot of the 'specific need' code is left in that would need to be taken out.

I also had plans for a plugin architechture of some kind, but I may just resort to a complex use of hooks.

    Functionality present so far:

    • 'Pages' for each user of a website, which consist of a gallery, bio and 'blog' (currently termed 'news')
    • Private page option, where a page owner must approve users before they can view a page
    • Comment hooks through EZComments on the blog articles
    • Page control panel
    • Cross-DB compliant in preparation for .8
    • Tableless, XHTML, styled with CSS

    What needs doing:

    • Hooks for the gallery
    • Hooks elsewhere (display/modify/delete/update hooks etc)
    • Serious work is required on the templates (or at least those that I did myself)
    • Removal of 'specific use' features and code
    • Plugin architechture
    • Code review

At least 5 hours work, if not more. I can't even think about undertaking this for at least a week, maybe two due to other commitments, but I do plan on finishing the module. I'll need to coordinate anything I do do with John as this module is 50% his work.

If there is enough interest, I can probably bump this up the priority list a bit...

  • Simon,

I'd suggest at least getting it into a NOC project and its cvs so that those that have expressed an interest so far can be added to the project to make an active contribution.

  • This would be great for my circumstances...a site for a college alum class. The ability for each alum to have their section/pages with bio/gallery/blog would fill the huge void from the 80% of users who lurk between the 10% who are willing to contribute on their own currently and the 10% who send me stuff to put up.

I assume others are in a similar circumstance to mine - I'd predict this would be very popular. Not a killer-app, but a big sell.

Don't know if I can help. Coding isn't an option (unless you are willing to wait a year or two), but perhaps helping with docs?

    $ contribution?

  • I would contribute towards this as well.
I have been using a combo of PNEmployee and vb4Journal but this would be great.

  • Hi Simon:

Wow!, just what is needed to add that 'spice' to PN. Hope John will agree about releasing to the community. This mod could add flexibility and functionality to PN (from users point of view).

    Regards!

    :)

Really? blog profile and gallery are like a user end holy trinity with the forum being the supreme diety.

Just wait for the feature/hook requests your likely to get once this is available.

Well, John and I thought this would be popular, but I wasn't expecting to get a response quite so quickly.

Maintenance could be interesting, to say the least...

What I'd really like some help with, pre release, is with templates and image work to make it look good. It's nice being functional, but people want things to look good as well...

  • I'll have a look at templating that for you if you like (I do only tableless(unless it's tabular data) xhtml1.1 with accessability in mind). Do you have access to my non-public e-mail so that I can see what you have?

  • This would be a great addon module for Postnuke. I know that damn Myspace has definitely affected my traffic. Please keep us informed on what's going with this. I think a lot of people would be very interested in it.
