The "brag" (I think it's more impressed than brag) is regarding it's integration, not it's features. With pnForum most of it's "features" are the ability to incorperate API compliant/core modules into it's structure easily and that it uses postnuke itself as it's information source. As well as being fully templated which is a BIG bonus.
I've found that I can easily, with very few lines, create a plugin to include just about any feature of my site I need to. And if it's API compliant the work is pretty much already done for you.
Although I've never used it, I've read a good number of posts that indicate that PNphpBB does work like your used to... but try and get more integration out of it and it becomes a real chore.
So I guess it's more like choosing which CMS to use, pick the one that suits your needs.
One thing I will say though in total favour of pnForum... it's not a popular target for crackers were as PNphpBB is. pnForum uses postnuke standards on security. So if your going with PNphpBB be sure to keep up to date with security adviseries on it.

I've had nothing but trouble with pnphpbb. I went to my host (located a couple of miles from me in chicago) and we sat at teh console and watched hackers in Malaysia, Ghana, South Africa and india pound on pnphpbb for hours until we got tired. And by pound I mean dozens of attacks per second. It may have to do with the site being called xxxracing but still...
Though most of them don't make it through (thanks to my host being on top of his game) the updated and "secure" version has been shattered at least 10-12 times.
They never do anything terrible but still... it's totally irresponsible for a program that's SO vulnerable to be out there... at least we don't have to pay for it...
From now on I'm with pnForum
